I'm almost sure I remember Fred posting when he hit that 256 library limit because he started trying to do a command-per-library to try and create really tiny exes, though I do remember that NCS had a few commands per library; I do admit I could be having false memories here though! I think I'll hit Aminet again (always good for a nostalgia trip), as they have the old Blitz mailing list archives...
PB pioneers
Yeah, Mark admits in an old FAQ (I still have the first BB PC website archived, since I wrote it) that the 'Blitzlibs' system had some 'shocking' problems... he also said that he didn't expect people to make much use of them, which partly explains it...

I've been hanging around here since PureBasic v3.30 (Windows) (08/16/2002) when i bought it. Like my sig says i am completely in love with PB and use it loads. It still holds a lot of mystery for me especially the Interface commands. but im determined to learn more
It is an awesome compiler and i always sing its praise to all my friends even those who are not interested in programming (much to their dismay
he he) Well done to all involved in the birth of PB!

Try March 1998. It mentions "Pheonix" which I think might have been the codename for Blitz 3 when it was being planned.Hi-Toro wrote:do admit I could be having false memories here though! Tinman/Hi-Toro: it brings back some good memories
.
To sum up, Roger Beausoleil helped at the very start and a (nearly) functionnal compiler was released in 1998. It was of course very basic as compiler but had an extensive command set, due to the NCS integration. It was aimed at start to be a compiler independant of the processor because PPC cards was out for the Amiga but no basic language for them. It didn't worked, because all the commandset (NCS) was written in 680x0 assembler and it needed a full rewrite to be available natively for PPC. Without count the war between 2 software platform for the PPC (WarmUP and PowerUP) which mades the development very hard. Nevertheless, a beta version of the Amiga PPC were sent to some beta testers and guess what ? Nothing worked as expected
.
All the progress was very fast, and the first Windows version comes out in 2000, after 6 Amiga versions. As Hi-Toro told it, all was very bugged, fully wrote in assembler (even directX libraries
) and it took me a while to get an almost working version. With the help of the first Windows users, it was fixed step by step and we got a langage as you can know it now. Check the History part to feel how the progress was made
About the pioneers, Andre was here since the beginning (1998 ?), and I should say he has done (and is still doing) an amazing work. Tinman was on the Amiga Blitz list and saw the first PB step but hesitated to register
(quite understandable).
Anyway, it's a long way since and I hope it will continue like this, with more and more mature and fun to use language... Wait'n'see

Hi-Toro; in fact you are a Blitz-Basic traitor
I received this from you when i was talking to someone called Dave Kirk.

Well, it should be nice if in the PB package included an little history (in History PBhelp section, for example) of PB, from the beginning. Perhaps Fred with some other one like Roger Beausoleil (VPureBasic), Andre ... could write it.> I have read www.blitzbasement.com Forum and FAQS. But i get advantage
of this email for to request you.

possible to do things with windows (Forms) (like in Amiga version) ?
I'm afraid not -- as you say, Blitz is now aimed solely at games
development. This stuff *may* come in Blitz Basic Pro, sometime next year,
but that's not at all certain.
> - What about A+4 (like in Amiga version) or += , -= , *= , /= , %= , and
so on; in place of A=A+4 ?
Afraid not...

for PC MSWindows?
Again, no, but there are lots of requests for this -- my guess is that this
would come in Blitz Pro (eventually).
In the meantime, if you just want to do Windows GUI stuff, try PureBasic
(www.purebasic.com) -- it's a very good clone of AmiBlitz, and has all those
features (but Blitz Basic kicks its behind when it comes to games of course
See ya,

Maybe it would really be a nice addition to the history, to write something about the 'beginning'. But this is up to the chief...

Thanks Hi-Toro for the links!
My original question about PB Pioneers is (in part) resolved.
Here is a link to some Starting Members. The page's internal link to the 2nd page is lost.

Other link:

Many links inserted on those pages are still alive, but navegate through them is a pain.
. . . . . . . .
Our steps on the Internet are archived forever, even for mail lists.
Big Brother always keeps our traces!
Kind regards
