question about buying PB and pure vision.
ok, my previous graduate advisor had bought PB off a R01-1 grant from the national institute of health so lab book software to suit our needs could be made. it never really got off the ground for a long time until i started my PHD, and got back in to PB. the thing is, i am no longer on the R01-1 grant, but the guidelines for NIH specifically state that software bought for or by an individual is able to be retained by that person. so here i am with PB bought and paid for by the government, and no way to find out how to the purchase through the grant was made. the R01-1 grant was for 10 million dollars and includes about 200 people, and i cant find out who actually made the purchase. for those of you who arent familiar with university red tape, i might as well try and find out who shot JFK than try and find out about small purchases on a grant. i am writing an NSRA grant for ME alone through NIH, and have no clue how to conduct the transaction for with a company outside the US. and specifically for purevision, which i am interested in too, dont know how to make the purchase. REGSOFT or anything like that is "not reccomended" as the administrators put it, to make software purchases. and i know that money used from the R01-1 has a hard time being transacted, especially outside the US, and even harder with very small companies. basically, i am asking fred is i have to buy PB again, or should i stick to NIH guidelines and the software is mine because it was bought for me to use, and guidelines say that i am free to keep and use it. The ony copy of PB was on my hard drive of my personal computer that was in my lab that came with me to my new school, so no one there can use it anymore. so basically, i am asking what are the guidelines about this? i am not trying to stick anyone, but i gotta keep my budget down as much as possible. they are free to scrap any part of my grant they want, which could include any software i previously have, namely PB. anone thinking about a research carreer?? HAVE FUN!!!

well, stay legal
what counts is the conditions under which it was sold (see the license of purebasic) not the local laws, rules or regulations (as far as the vendor is concerned
) so check out the licence...
now, strictly spoken, an individual or entity bought the product, so that entity is entitled to use it under the conditions stated in the license, so if a university buys one license, it is entitled to use 1 copy at a time
if you are not that entity, or not part of that entity, (or no longer etc.) strictly spoken you are not entitled to use that copy
now, if you are the ONLY owner of that copy, and you download an upgrade, and you're not blacklisted for any reason i guess your copy should stay working... although, strictly spoken, you are using an illegal copy if you are no longer part of the purchasing entity
this may conflict with the regulations you refer to, in which case you, striclty spoken, would have to prove the product was bought by the entity for you, on your request, and / or by you
(hey, and i'm not even a lawyer, and from a different country and only applying logic, but hey, i'm for hire
although simply buying a new copy would be cheaper;-))

do you also work at home?
if so, you could purchase a personal copy
for using at home and then would not have
to feel guilty about using Pure when at work
and then if they decided to cancel funding of
your project you'd not lose your work
because you'd have it at home also

Quite frankly, I really don't think it matters what the NIH states -- what
matters is what the license for PureBasic states. The license applies to
whoever buys it (NIH?) and doesn't give the purchaser the right to allow
others (you?) to use the software. But check with Fred to be 100% sure.
