Sorry I don't have an exact answer (without looking back at the code) since I haven't worked on this program in years.
I think I requested Admin Rights so that I could create/modify files in semi-protected directories, like "Program Files" and others. I don't believe it had anything to do with hidden files.
Also this was written on Windows XP, and I think requesting Admin Rights was unobtrusive (no security popup), so I didn't worry about it. I know it's different on Windows 7.
