Sick of spam

Post by PB »

Can the forum be changed so that new members have to
manually approved before posting? Spam is rife here now.

As a new member of other forums, I don't mind waiting
a few days to be approved by their mods. It's the norm.
I compile using 5.31 (x86) on Win 7 Ultimate (64-bit).

I'm sick of spam too, but I don't think that measure will make any real difference.

What might help would be to have the title pre-fixed with [SPAM] automatically when a long-standing member of the forum reports the post.

.... or how about giving all the regulars a special admin right to quarantine suspected spam posts?

That doesn't solve anything, because you can't see that
title on the individual post until you go to the topic. For
example, I started a thread about Zorin OS a while back.
The "View New Posts" link shows new posts about it.
So I go there, only to be met with 4 spam replies at
the end of the thread. Having [SPAM] on them would
have achieved nothing, as I still had to go there just
to see it. :(

How about just having a few hours grace period for new users before posting?
At least that would reduce the flow.

I think that would prevent bots from posting.

That would bring anything at all. One would only annoy new users.

It's even more annoying for us, as we need to manually delete all spams users.. I just changed the captcha on the registration page, could some of you give a try and so if it's OK ? (and tell me which user name so I can delete it).

Hi Fred!

Registration works fine.
I made an account for "SpamBottest", also posted in "Off Topic".

Edit:
The "Josephbib"-Bot is very fast.

Some time ago, I created a test forum,
in one week I had have 156 spammers,
so I needed to delete it manually to.
So, I installed a phpbb option, but then you have to accept every new member manually.
A lot of work, but clearing up spam also.

Marc,

No one single bot since 1 week, it looks like they don't know what is PureBasic about :). That's a great news, no more wasted time on clearing up bots !

A thought Fred - the bots seem to be breaking the captcha over a period of time, so if you where to swap captcha's regularly, you could always be a step ahead. May be write a tiny PB app to do that..........
