I tried to reproduce the issue on WinXP x86 PB5.2 Beta12. Used both a regular USB stick and a SanDisk U3, with and without PB files loaded on the sticks. Nothing bad happened. Is it possible that your USB stick contains PB files and your Anti-Virus checks them as soon as the USB is connected?

If it sounds simple, you have not grasped the complexity.
To reproduce the problem:
- 1 - Open IDE
- 2 - Insert a USB key
- 3 - Crash
Following your comment, I formatted my USB stick and re-test, it does not solve anything.
Then I disabled my anti-virus, It still crash. Tested on Windows 7 x64.
I did my tests with two USB stick (before and after formatting). Tested also with another computer on windows 8. I will try on XP with the same USB stick at office.
I wasn't able to reproduce the issue either on Win7, PB 5.11 x64, SanDisk Cruzer USB.
What is strange though is how it only affects the PB IDE and not other applications ...?
