Blender exported mesh has display issues

Post by Thiefbrain »

Hello everybody,

so I experimented with Blender today and came across some issue with the BlenderDotScene exporter in the latest version. The models from the PureBasic examples are working just fine, but whenever I apply a texture to a self-made model it just colours it, but doesn't show the texture.
Image
The little barrel on the left is my, the other the Barrel.mesh from PureBasic, with the Wood.jpg texture applied on both of them. So I don't think it's a coding issue, maybe a problem of the converter. Can anyone confirm this?

Greetings
Markus

Hello Thiefbrain,

I believe your missing your UV texture coordinates. That's probably the most common issue, but let me know if it's something else.
The reason the texture works with Purebasic's default meshes, like cube or cylinder, is because they already have the UV points built into them.

In order to add them in blender you need to mark the seems of the mesh and then unwrap it onto a 2d image. Then you can get an outline of your
mesh and see how the texture will wrap around it. It might seem kinda complicated, but it's pretty easy once you get used to it.

There are a few nice videos on YouTube that explain the unwrapping process step by step. I would recommend checking them out.
Hope that helps, and just holler if need more info on the subject.

EDIT:
Also, I noticed that your mesh had flat vertex shading. If you want you should be able to adjust that in blender to smooth shading. Then it will look more like a smooth
curved surface. Sorry for being off topic, but I thought I would just point that out.

Thank you Samuel, that was the problem. I have never worked with Blender before, so the UI and not only the UI are a bit new/weird to me. I worked before only with programs like Solid Edge ST3, if you know it, and Blender is completely different. Anyway, thanks again for solving this.

Your welcome, and I'm glad it worked out for you. Blender has a ton of commands and features, but once you get the hang of the basics things get a lot easier.
So, just keep at it.
