Picogram - Organic Molecule Drawing Software

Post by BASICBasher »

Hello everyone!
Just something I've been working on recently, it's a program for drawing pictures of organic hydrocarbons.
I've tried to make things as easy to use as possible, all the things you need are in the toolbox just click on the pictures.
You can save and load your creations (there's some files in the archive) or take a snapshot and save it as a bitmap.
Nothing fancy yet, there's no sanity checking on the molecules as you make them.

There's a few keyboard shortcuts to make things easier:
  • Select atoms by pressing the first letter of their name (Chlorine has a compromise of 'L').
  • Select a bond by hitting space, with a bond selected it will be flipped.
  • Bonds can also be rotated at 45 degree angles using the left and right arrows.
  • Use the numbers 1,2,3 to make the current bond single, double or triple respectively.
All the code is mine and the pictures were done by a friend who gave his permission to share.

Here's the link.
Enjoy!
I'd appreciate any comments, criticisms or suggestions.

By the way it runs really slowly on Linux with extreme mouse lag, any ideas on what could be causing this?

Hi BASICBasher,

Very nice, thank you for sharing.

One minor suggestion; would the colour of oxygen look better if it was white rather than black?

I don't know what the contrast is like on your screen but Oxygen is blue. In saying that I want to comply with official colouring standards whenever necessary and oxygen would look better as white.

Hi BASICBasher,

Apologies for the misunderstanding I created.

What I meant was that the black text on the blue background. I just felt that white text might be better.

I've been thinking the same thing, I'll just need to convince my sprite guy to draw another one. I'm terrible at artistic task, look in the 'legacy' folder for examples of that. :D

this is a good educational example, and can be used in chemistry classes.
thanks
