Fred, I know you are probably tired of me posting here in the request forum, but I think this one may actually reduce your workload...
How about setting up a Wiki, in addition to the forum?
There are so many scattered, yet helpful, pages out there on PB that it is difficult to know which page to go to. Not only that, they can be difficult to find (I think I find a new one each week), and even the http://www.purebasic.com/links.php has two dead links out of the five listed in "PureBasic Resources".
If we had access to a wiki, where PB users could contribute to the content, you would have a LOT more links, and a higher percentage of "good" links. I think it will help not only with support, but with seekers as well.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Re: Wiki
I think it's a good idea tenaja, but I doubt Fred has time to do it. Best bet would be one of the forum members, if anyone has the time (and the will).

A wiki or wiki type features for this website would be very useful.

Re: Wiki
I just hope he will; it takes a newby under an hour to install it. Then one of his moderators (i.e. a trusted user) could configure it. He could even put it under a sub-domain, and turn the whole sub-domain over for installation after the db is enabled.IdeasVacuum wrote:I think it's a good idea tenaja, but I doubt Fred has time to do it. The biggest reason for it to be on the PB site is continuity. Right now, the non-forum side of purebasic.com is great...for ten years ago. Add to that the severe lack of information, outdated links, and small number of other sites (most of which are also outdated), and this forum is just about the only thing going, support-wise. A good wiki would allow "us" to write how-to articles and edit them--like a more organized version of the Tips & Tricks forum section.

Re: Wiki
I recall a Wiki created for PureBasic years ago but nobody bothered contributing to it.
Microsoft Visual Basic only lasted 7 short years: 1991 to 1998.

Re: Wiki
We already have online documentation and I'm sure Fred would be happy to receive submissions on PB usage. At the very least, there's an opportunity for improving on the creative use of English that makes up much of the documentation.
Writing and maintaining a Wiki, or any other sort of documentation, is a time consuming process. I doubt that relying on the casual efforts of forum members will produce anything more than a few disconnected topics.
A bad Wiki is worse than no Wiki at all.

Here's where the old Wiki existed -> http://www.purearea.net/pb/english/purewiki/index.php
And here's the thread from 2005 that started it -> http://www.purebasic.fr/english/viewtop ... =7&t=15901
It didn't work 8 years ago... what are the odds of a Wiki working today?

Re: Wiki
I don't know about others, but I am not too interested in contributing to a wiki that is not owned by PB. I would want my contributions to have the same longevity as PB.MachineCode wrote:Here's where the old Wiki existed -> http://www.purearea.net/pb/english/purewiki/index.php

I have seen it successful on other programming sites; that is why I suggested it.

PureArea *is* owned by a PureBasic team member (Andre). So, it was the official Wiki at the time.Tenaja wrote:I am not too interested in contributing to a wiki that is not owned by PB

Re: Wiki
And strangely, I knew nothing of it at all.... I guess I must have missed the post at the time? Because if I had known about it, especially as back then as I was complaining about the documentation, I am pretty certain I would have contributed.MachineCode wrote:PureArea *is* owned by a PureBasic team member (Andre). Oh well. one of those things I guess... but to be honest, if the wiki had had a clickable link from this website/forum in a prominent place (like the blog link in the header of the forum as an example) people probably would have used it.
still, its a moot point and I genuinely cannot be arsed to get into a full bore argument over something trivial hehe. I still think it would be a good feature. it doesn't bother me if only 10 people out of 8000+ used it. as long as it benefited everybody, its worth it

Tenaja, there really is no point in arguing for the sake of it is there? People will always have differing opinions, and some people like to use a huge wooden spoonPureBasic About Requester wrote: Team Members :
