a little question about mp3...

Post by lethalpolux »

I need explanations... when you use mp3 for your game ( your own musics, you have composed them ), if you sell the game, is it a licence for that...?

Every time you play an MP3 you should pay a Licence for using the decoder algorithm...
So even if the music is yours the DECODER is not, and you have to pay for it!

I would advice you to use OGG Vorbis, it's a free and open format, and it can compress much more than Mp3 (1/2 the size) and can use much lower bitrates without loosing quality (unlike Mp3)...

** Warning **

Purebasic does not support OGG Streams !!! (Playing large files from disc)

The ogg sound commands are intented to be used with small samples, because it loads them into memory and decompresses them there (that's why a large OGG file takes a long time before play), also your memory get's sucked when using long files, because the file size is the size of the file uncompressed.

You can always use MCI to stream it (code posted on the forums), has long has you install the Codec of OGG in the computer, or directly use the OGG.dll functions, or the FMOD.dll...

Personally i use MCI commands, since all windows have it, so it's free and only the OGG codec needs to be installed.

If you are making a game, you are safe until 5,000 copies are sold. The licensing fees seem geared toward larger companies, that can pay the fee's without a hitch (like Microsoft). The big companies are forced to purchase a license, that's where they make their money. Other alternatives are a very good idea.
Do I need a license to use mp3/mp3PRO in games?
Yes. Games using mp3/mp3PRO encoded content are licensed on a per-title basis.

However, No license fees are due if less than 5 000 copies of a particular game title are distributed.

Here's a link to the MP3 Licensing:

If you use the codecs that the computer already have installed i think you dont need to pay any licence.

Per example, if you use MCI, you dont need to pay a licence.
