Debugger always "stand alone"?

I think this started when I updated to version 5.0 -- when I run a source code directly from the editor, it starts out showing the normal "compiling" and "waiting for exe to start" but then it switches to an external / standalone debugger -- no longer integrated with the editor.

I have tried setting the compiler options to specifically use the integrated debugger, but this does not help.

Is there a setting I goofed or a file that wasn't updated or some way I can return it to the normal behaviour?

In preferences debugger top left choose debugger type (have always used standalone type)

I've set it to use the integrated, but the debug opens a new window everytime.... It's probably a corrupted setting somewhere -- thanks.
