how is crossover different to wine?
I've never tried it, mind you I don't have wine on my system either.

Re: Crossover for free today
It's built on wine, and a lot of the Codeweavers work filters back into wine. Practically, the difference is they work a LOT harder to avoid regressions in real world use, and they target a lot of their alterations to improving the use of the applications they have as supported.idle wrote:how is crossover different to wine?

I haven't used their stuff in a couple years (not since my imac died), since I no longer have a mac or linux installation, but I was very fond of the quality of their work. It was more generally usable than wine, for most applications listed as 'working' in their database.
Re: Crossover for free today
Thanks, that was Interesting, apparently codeweavers hosts winehq.
Seem to me that if your going to pay $60 for a years subscription, you may as well install windows on a septate drive / partition.
Though while it's free for a year, it wouldn't hurt to try.

Hi Ramihyn_. Thanks for the heads up; caught it just in the nick of time! Installed it on a MacBook running OSX Lion, and was able to install PureBasic 5.00 b8 for Windows; so far, successfully ran some of the help examples.Ramihyn_ wrote:You can get Crossover for free today...
If anyone's interested, the offer's still valid for another forty minutes. It is now 11:22pm, CST!
UPDATE: It is now 12:01am, CST, and the offer has ended! But Crossover is still available for sale at US$59.95.

Re: Crossover for free today
There are people who for whatever reason do not want Windows installed on their systems, and there are people who for whatever reason cannot (or will not) dual boot, or cannot (or will not) use virtualization software for a particular task.idle wrote:Seem to me that if your going to pay $60 for a years subscription, you may as well install windows on a septate drive / partition.
For those people who are in those categories but still have a fair amount of operational expense freedom, something like Crossover can be attractive, since it is rather better supported than just wine alone.
Not saying it's for everyone, but it's doing well enough that they've stayed solvent, so I think there's a market.
