VMWare, Virtual PC & Co.

Some time ago, I made very good experiences with VMWare, both under Linux as on Win NT, when working for a company's project.
As I do have a personal demand now, but VMWare is quite expansive, I wonder if there are any cheaper - but still good - alternatives.

Did any of you try out MS Virtual PC (they aquired it from Connectix) and can give me some hints on pros and cons? Like supported OS (Linux is not officially supported, but heard it might be possible) or if/which DirectX versions are supported.

Of course any other emulation software is welcome, too; as long as it makes it very easy to quickly install a guest OS on a Windows 2000 machine. Mainly this should be Win 9x/NT/2000, but Linux would be welcome as well...

I use Virtual PC and swear by it. I find it to be easier to set up and run
than VMWare, and runs in 99% real-time on my PC with high priority set,
and I only have a 665 mhz CPU (Pentium III). See these two links:

In the Virtual PC post I give my reasons why I find it better than VMWare.
I don't know how good the app is now that MS has acquired it, though.

I used VirtualPC (Microsoft bought this product to Connectix after version 5, go to www.microsoft.com/virtualpc), it is easy to use and understand and i had no problem using linux, MSDOS, and all Windows OSes under Windows 2000Pro.

Inspired by this talk I just installed my copy of VMWare that I've had forever.. This is seriously cool stuff..

Now if I can just find a floppy drive to put in here so I can install 98!

You don't need a floopy drive necessarely, i think if i remember correctly it can boot from an image. If you have a win98 bootable cd you could extract the boot sector and store it to a small image file.

Hehehe, well I did say I preferred Virtual PC to VMWare... so, VMWare is
bad!
