while all programs under win2k and w98 worked fine with a scrollmouse, many (read: older ones, take wordperfect v7 ) don't do so anymore under xp....

ah, found something! togglemouse does it... forget i asked, unless you now something that's free and works as well

Try KatMouse by Eduard Hiti at http://kickme.to/katmouse. It's FREE and it solved all my scrolling problems under WinXP, including adding scrolling to a few apps that didn't support it.
It worked great for me without any customization, but you can make special settings for any applications that don't work properly with the scroll wheel.
