A tablet which can run MS Office; has USB 3 support and can run Win 8 Pro (non arm version).

Sounds good to me... just have to see how much they sell for?

In the corporate market desktops have pretty much disappeared, it's laptops and dockingstations everywhere, at least in all those companies I deal with. The few desktops I run into are either CAD stations, or leftovers from the past.

In the long run, regular desktops may indeed become more rare. If you can buy a decent laptop, docking station, and monitor, for a decent price, then why would you go for a desktop?

Exactly! The point is: performance on laptops is increasing as well...

And, except for gaming :-) let's be honest: we've pretty much reached the performance levels we need. For example, I replaced my wife's aging Sus K8N-E with an AMD Ahtlon 64 (single core) with another 'oldie', a Fujitsu Siemens mainboard sporting an Intel Core 2 Duo E6320.

That Core 2 Duo, low in that product series anyway, and a few years old, does everything 'home' or 'office' related and even runs a few games (including Aion, something using the CryEngine). I had to put in a 9600 GT 'green' to get there, but for 99 euro I've got her a very decent PC.

Now, project that onto modern day laptops, and you'll immediately spot the problem with laptops: video performance. We need better video performance when on mains, and better energy saving whilst on batteries.

The multi core approach that's resurfacing again with mobile phones and tablets, featuring cores that were NOT made equal, makes perfect sense for laptops as well. Get basic performance during day 2 day use, and go all out when gaming whilst on mains.

The disadvantage: no upgrading.

As an alternative (wasn't Sony playing with this?) a kind of 'universal' optical bus into a docking station might make sense. As soon as the laptop is connected to the docking station, simply off-load all GPU stuff to the docking station. If you need more graphic power, get yourself a better docking station. (This won't happen as manufacturers will probably never settle on a standard, I know.)

So, we only need desktops because we want to upgrade. But if the basic kit is of sufficient level, we do not need to upgrade. Which is why many / most corporate desktops are being or will be replaced with laptops. And with increasing performance and decreasing power consumption and pricing the same thing will happen to Joe Average Home User.

And because a desktop with equivalent performance is cheaper.

I like the part where he talks about the NETFLIX application:
yeah if that's the most important reason to buy this stuff...

BTW: I can watch Netflix (smooth) on my $190 Android tablet - null problemo

I'm wondering, why this is also called surface .. it will be complicated to distinguish between surface (table) an surface (tablet) as most even don't know the table.

Stop wondering and start pondering. This is not the next touchscreen toy.
Lot of windows and hardware potential. Seems to me that with the surface
you can be mobile and still be productive.

That's a very astute observation, fsw. Good one!

The line between laptops and tablets are already starting to blur, just as it once did between desktops and laptops.

And that's probably because this is the first time they are actually manufacturing their own computer.
