Rook Zimbabwe wrote:Japanese Animation (as it is called here in the USA as Japanimation which is a silly word!) consists of most of the worst parts of the art form... Tentacle Porn, panty porn, grossout porn... very little of the great stuff like Macross/RoboTech or StarBlazers/Space battleship Yamato (the live action movie I really want to see!!!) Not even the violence toned down versions of Speed Racer/Gogo Racer

Or we get the live action japanese inspired bubblegum nonsense like Power Rangers (I have no idea what that is called in Japan and do not want to!)(Though usually the pink ranger is HOT!)
My favorite part of that show when they dragged it to America was that in the first series that I was forced to watch with my nephew the Yellow Ranger was a guy in Asia and they used a girl in the USA so when she "morphed" she became a boy... Thats quite a change!

Nowadays the black and white comic books are here... in english... but they are still slightly risque showig panties and breasts... Not that I really mind that... but I don't think the bookstores should provide free reading rooms for preteens to read that stuff!

These links are great! Thank you! :D It is nice to see the good stuff that is coming out of japan!

Sorry but I must take issue with your definition of "Japanese Animation". All that stuff you listed belongs to the Hentai/Doujin Genre. But that's what you get with a sexually repressed society.

Also, I think "Japanimation" is a pretty outdated term. I actually have never heard anyone use it, even. These days it is correctly referred to as Anime by the majority of people. "Japanese Animation" is too broad of a generalization to use when talking about a specific sub-genre, and it unfairly casts the other 95% of Japanese work in an inaccurate manner.

The live action stuff, I don't know much about, but what we typically get over here is usually referred to as Sentai. It's aimed at kids, there is little actual blood or anything like that, just cool fights with special FX up the wazoo. I could think of worse things for kids to watch.

As for the "black and white comics", you have plenty of great material with good stories and varying levels of fan service. That's the nature of the beast. But most mainstream stuff you could find the equivalent of on Prime Time Network TV. The more risque stuff is out there, sure - but ANY art form has that kind of stuff.

I don't think a 13 year old seeing a panty shot, or a stray boob pop out is going to destroy them or anything. But if there is a store out there letting kids read the more explicit stuff then perhaps you should take that up with them.

I just got the live action Space Battleship: YAMATO
I was sooo dissapointed with the ending! But it was tru Japan Kamakaze fashion!
Yamato (Star Blazers in USA)
and Macross series 1

thats it. I watched Akira and was underwhelmed and Ghost in the Machine was vapid as well!

The newer ones look like exploding head tentacle porn or shocky vampire ninja porn now!
Binarily speaking... it takes 10 to Tango!!!

I saw Jin-Roh a couple years back on Cable, and thought it was excellent. I really like its setting and they seemed to pay attention to historical details of what things looked like back then.
I've been meaning to get my dad to watch it, cause I think he would like the time period, and the story is pretty OK.

I never liked Akira.. It was "just OK" up until the gross-out ending, which made absolutely no sense.

Some older works that are interesting are

Silent Service & Super Atragon. I also have a box set of Gall Force OVA's too (except for the last 1 or 2 which are not in it). It covers the plot arc for Eternal Story through Stardust War, and also includes Rhea Gall Force. The first 3 are the most interesting because the plot arcs over the length of those 3, following a single character with two groups of supporting characters.

Also. The Crest/Banner of The Stars series is really good, although not always top-notch on action it has a solid story. The lastest release can only be found Subtitled, but the series has stalled since the series of books they are based on are also incomplete... Wish the writer would finish them.

I just re-watched the 1st opening for Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory.

Man, they don't make stuff like that anymore. I know it was a special series to commemorate the anniversary of Gundam and everything, but the artwork was extremely high quality for its time, and it had a very Top-Gun feel to it.

I really like the high quality hand drawn art of older series, as opposed to the glossed over CG stuff we get these days. It just made it feel more "real" back then. :(

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tA450yRJ6Cs

Youtube & still shots in the opening do NOT do this series justice. When you see the quality and fluidity of the Animation on a TV it is like watching something Disney would have put together (production art quality-wise)

I've heard Gantz is really twisted and fucked up though... Unless I am confusing it with something else.

The description I read at the time, pegged it as decidedly not my taste.

yes it is a bit twisted but it's really cool if you like sci-fi (the plot is brilliant, you can really imagine the universe), I recommend watching the live action movie first then the anime though :)

Amagami
It is the animation of visual novel game made by Japanese PS2 software. We draw a pattern of high school love, love Japanese understand a situation. If you would like to "OUT IN" a Japanese man and you will be able to study much. Although the commentary too deep, it is kind of animation.

Aria
That's what made ??anime cartoon. I have the impression that from beginning to end and heartwarming. The story feels the future of Venezia, the impression is different from other anime. It is what you would learn in trouble like politeness, to expression.

Asobi ni ikuyo
Is the original light novel. If you were a girl cute aliens, perspective Is not it become like this are drawn. Appeared as the OVA, there was a fairly popular. I think the average rating is a Japanese animation.

Canaan
It is a unique work that drew an assassin. Virus have an unexpected boost the production, I feel a commitment to fairly depiction. Since the assassination, weapons such as sniper rifles and guns appeared frequently. Since Shanghai is drawn to the stage, at first I felt quite embarrassed. This is famous is because the relationship was "TYPE-MOON".

Clannad
Anime visual novel game is to capture the girl a nice full of individuality. I have both the PC version and the PS3 version. It may be affirmed with the game very popular. In the anime, the story of one of them is drawn. The game is a multi-story. Need time to finish the game is fierce.
