Scared of Linux?

For all those who wanted to see what it was all about but did not want to do an install check out dyne:bolic. It will be of special interest to those interested in multimedia/ web-broadcasting but you'll need a cd burner and bandwidth (it's a ~440M download). If you have an Award bios MAKE SURE you get the ".1.1.1" version. It works, I've tried it on an old pc and, eh, a very old pc (I only have old pc's

thx for this one, i downloaded it and booted a pc: Voila , a perfect system to play and stream mp3's for my home.

Yeah, not long now and we will all be able to ditch the stereo, the dvd, the digital tv box, the video, maybe even the xbox/ps/nintendo-thingy... AND ALL THOSE ANNOYING INCOMPATIBLE REMOTES, a'hem, all without being a right rich b*stard!

Now if only the prices of big plasma displays or projectors would come down to earth, that'd be sweeeet!

dyne:bolic didn't recognize my keyboard (compaq USB), nor my soundcard (creative SB Live!)

It recognises my Createive Live. As for the kb do you have a ps2 you could use temporarily? This would get you on to it so you can create a nest and configure for usb kb ready for next boot. But before that... can you use your mouse ok?

FYI: I can boot it, and use the mouse properly... Don't know about nesting, coz I didn't try.. (would it require me typing anything?)

IIRC creating a nest involves no typing. You need to do it purely to store any changes, so it's worth getting out of the way as early as poss. Use the dyne:bolic dialog that comes up automatically in the middle of the screen. It has a number of options in the second tab(?) to create the nest, set language, network and xfree stuff but I would still create the nest and reboot first. Then look out for the prompt half way through booting that asks you if you want to use the existing nest and, of course, accept it with a "Y" key... hence you *are* going to need a ps2 kb to get things sorted

Must admit I have no experience of Linux+USB so maybe try the mailing list first. There could be an obvious solution I'm missing (maybe a boot parameter as with normal Linux).

Good luck, stick with it to you get the prob sorted because I think this distro is going to be very popular. Did you notice the OpenMosix stuff and the fact it auto-discovers other nodes? Burn some CD's and you have your own cluster!!! I also think Jaromil is planning floppy and nw boot options. Well, I'm excited

Downloaded and booted up fine! Only prob though is i can't seem to change the screen resolution (probably down to my lack of knowledge in linux) Maybe i should start to learn more about this wierd 'leet' OS

Impressive stuff though.

@kale: If I remember correctly it was under the systems menu when you right click the desktop..

Be careful messing with xfree options! I think changing resolution should be ok. You can do it from the menu AND you should be able to use ctrl-alt-+/- (numeric keypad, num lock on). If you go messing with the selected display driver be sure that your card is fully supported else xfree may fail to create a display. I have a current outstanding issue stopping xfree even establishing a fallback display mode. Not a huge issue because it would take me five mins to reconfigure from scratch but I'd like to see if there is a way to "repair" the situation first.

Yeah i can navigate the menus ok and find all of what i need, its just the display config doesn't give me the option to go above 1024x768@60Hz

no worries though, ill have a play with the drivers and i f i make a mistake i haven't created a nest so i can just reboot back to original settings

You can create a nest to preserve your settings while you play about. It's just a file so you could boot back into Windows and delete it for a clean start (prob not a good idea to attempt to delete it via dyne:bolic, assuming it would even let you).
