Macbook pro

Post by srod »

Hi,

have just bought a Macbook Pro and am running Purebasic ok... except that the editing component of the IDE (Scintilla I presume) is pretty much unusable. I am getting repeated characters, misplaced caret, hidden characters. It is completely out of whack.

Have I failed to do something correctly in setting up my Mac/Purebasic?

Stephen.

**EDIT : ok, had to reduce the font size hugely!

Glad you got it worked out. If you are using Lion you might check out 'Hints for using Lion' in 'API List for Mac'.

Welcome to the Mac side. :D

Thanks William. It's a nice computer, but having been immersed in Windows for years it's taking a while to get used to. Finding my way around though and liking what I am finding. :)

Am using Lion yes and... the bloody scrollbars are weird! :)

You're right about the Scintilla Mac port being unusable though.
I often get (NULL) things appearing, no shortcuts working (Control/Alt + arrows, Control+Shift+arrows etc... which I use a lot usually!)

I reported this as a bug a while back. It has also caused some errors in a code editor for a program and I can not seem to find or fix it by any means. Hopefully it can be fixed in a future release.

Some things are different like the menu bar that is always at the top of the screen, using cmd-c / cmd-v to cut and paste instead of ctrl-c / ctrl-v but once you get used to it it's a very nice OS :)
As for the scrollbars, you can change the behavior. The default way should be logical when you are using a Magic Trackpad.

I don't experience the problem.
The font I'm using is Monaco / regular / 14

It only happened a couple of times within PB's editor. But as for the code editor, porting Tululoo to Mac, it happens all the time. I haven't tried compiling Tululoo since I reinstalled Lion but will try it soon. This was the only thing holding Tululoo from be available on Mac. Everything else I had adjusted and fixed for it.

Yes the screenshot J. Baker posted is exactly what I am seeing with all fonts - monospaced or not. I see it though not just with loading PB files, but when I am typing simple commands. The only way I can seem to remove it is to reduce the font size to 10 pts, which, on this 13.3" screen is at the limit of my straining eye-sight! :)

Stephen,

did you already try to use Courier 16? Since I selected this monospace font and size I am quite happy. Did you take a look into the following thread?

I tried all kinds of mono-spaced fonts to no avail (including Courier). I shall try again though when I am back on the Macbook. At the moment I am using Courier New 10 pt which is difficult to work with.

This must be a Lion problem? I'm not having any problems in Snow Leopard. I find the sequence of setting the fonts confusing not having a 'done' button (in the font selection window) and having to hit 'apply' before the font is shown. It appears that I am using Monaco 10 pt. but I tried 14 pt. and it looked fine. I suppose you saw the hint about using the 'Silk' icon set.. but I don't know what that has to do with the fonts.

I'm sorry you had this bad experience with your first Mac, it's unfortunate that Lion and PureBasic haven't worked out their differences before you tried it. As I understand it, Fred doesn't have Lion and so these problems may not be fixed immediately. I am interested to hear how this works out so I can add it to 'Hints for using Lion' and maybe help others that run into this problem.

Aye, been so busy today that I haven't had a chance to look further. As I say though I did try 101 combinations of different fonts and font sizes etc. Still, a font size of 10 is useable... just! :)

I'm using Monaco 14 and I never had the bug you describe with it :)
