More then ever, hour after hour, work is never over

Post by codewalker »

Hi,
Computers, Operating Systems and Tech are getting stronger, better and faster.
But more then ever, hour after hour, work is never over.

Here you can see the next jump into tech merging with reality
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... KLzs&gl=US
You can skip the boring intro and go directly to time point 6:25 and see the examples.

All that Tech, in the end, will it free us more from work or just enslave us more ?
It started with a mobile phone, after that a smart phone and now - every year
I see more and more people on vacation or at home after work, still connected
with a tablet to the company they work for. It seems to grow into being impossible
to switch off the connection after work at home or on vacation.

Apple users have a way of saying it : Windows is for people who want to work with computers.
While actually people should only need computers to do some work.

Daft Punk also has a way of saying it :

See you at windows 8 - - 8)
greetings

Not necessarily. You're probably talking about tech jobs, right? Well, most people don't work in tech. They're check-out operators in supermarkets, or builders on construction sites, or whatever. There's millions of jobs that don't require technology that the worker takes home. I think you're over-reacting a bit. :) BTW, great stuff from 6:25 in that video.

It affects "white-collar jobs" and is actually a common problem nowadays.

It is one of the reasons why some people talk about the building of a new "working class".

Hi at MC

I hope you are right. However I see people in their free time using their Tablet checking their next scheduled shift
in the supermarket. What products need to be refilled in what rows and where to find them in store. I see Panasonic
coming out with a Tablet specially for outdoor workers in the industry and construction.

If it's not the company they work for then it's facebook, email, sms, skype, on-line gaming, auctions,
an article they are writing on, surfing the web, buying something on ebay, translating something, it goes on
and on. I also sense that a growing nr of people feel a bit lost in society without their smartphone or even
worse without their tablet. And that includes me too. I also start feeling "lost" a bit, without having my laptop
somewhere near to me, even in my free time or on holiday.

You said it: "in their free time". It's not work time. People just decide to use them when "off the job", when in reality they don't actually HAVE to. That's what I'm talking about. Life will go on if they don't refer to them, they'll still do their job, etc. I don't see it as a big problem at all. I think people who work in tech (you?) get a bit jaded by it all, and others like myself (who don't work in tech) don't see what the issue is. :)

It comes down to personal choice.

If I had a full time job at some company, etc.. If I took a vacation, I would only take a cell phone, and make it clear to others you better not call me if it's not an emergency. Like, the building is on fire, or the server room just flooded, etc..

And unless you're the manager or the owner, a company shouldn't call you even if the server room DID get flooded. If a company needs to call someone who's on vacation whenever disaster strikes, then it's got serious management problems.

That's why I never seriously pursued being a Sys Admin or Webmaster..

Nothing like a page at 3 in the morning to go in and change a bad cable :o

Although honestly, I kind of regret not trying to get my foot in the door. Both my uncles on my dads side have had great jobs at cool places. One worked for NASA before leaving because of internal office politics re: him and his wife (she used to do data entry in the same office I think), and my other uncle, I never really asked exactly WHO he works for but he was always very busy during shuttle missions and stuff, doing backend network support. I've seen badges for both Allied Signal & NASA/Goddard on him, and he took me into Goddard once when I was 14 and went to work with him for the day. I think he's also associated with Lockheed. It was really cool, I got to see the Hubble Control room where they receive data (from the outside anyway... it was pretty dark in there) and stuff.

I miss those days, I wanted to work for NASA for the longest time when I was younger.

I'll be 30 next October, and I have never been to college... God I feel old and like I missed a really big boat  All I got now is Purebasic, lol...
