Gmail doesn't always send the same mail twice
<rant>
I've noticed a lot lately, that Gmail won't let me send the same email twice (or more!). Really annoying! I assume it thinks I'm spamming? All I'm doing is sending myself the same body text for testing an email app I'm doing, but sometimes the mail just isn't getting delivered. Thanks for the censorship, Gmail!

Microsoft Visual Basic only lasted 7 short years: 1991 to 1998.

The blocking of attachments is ridiculous too. Try Yahoo, it's a whole lot better in every aspect (which is probably why it has 5* the customers that GMail has).

Re: Gmail doesn't always send the same mail twice
I like GMail. It has the best spam filter I have ever seen. What's the problem MachineCode? Just use a redirecting email address for your tests. E.g. machinecode_temporary@yahoo.com redirects to machinecode_permanent@gmail.com and then you send your tests from gmail to yahoo instead of directly to gmail.
I even have my own mail server hosted by Google with Google Apps which is redirecting all to my GMail address.
@IdeasVacuum: you mean attachments with executables inside? Who the hell sends executables via email?

Via Wikipedia, Yahoo has ~273M users, Gmail has ~260M...
so Yahoo has ~5% more users...
and has existed for 7 years longer...
(so I assume it has more abandoned/unused accounts included too...)
Re: Gmail doesn't always send the same mail twice
Yahoo! itself is abandoned/unused. If they can't find a buyer soon, there is going to be nothing left to buy. Of course when people offer serious money to buy Yahoo!, Yahoo! won't sell, so Yahoo! appears happy with the status quo.kenmo wrote: (so I assume it has more abandoned/unused accounts included too...)
Best wishes to the PB community. Thank you for the memories.
Re: Gmail doesn't always send the same mail twice
The only thing I like about gmail is the free US calls and huge space available.
I get to call my mommy whenever I'm connected to the internet.
Also I use it to store backup archives of music or movies, sometimes.

Oh, the info I read was well out of date thenVia Wikipedia, Yahoo has ~273M users, Gmail has ~260M...
They got into a quagmire of difficulties by failing to work out exactly what their services should be. I think their future looks bleak, but they might be able to pull a rabbit out of the hat. Face Book seems to be losing ground to their competition too, as are Microsoft. The common denominator is that they all started with a great idea that grew their business fast, but have found it difficult to sustain the huge corporation they built. However, look how low Apple got - and look at them now. Never say never..........Yahoo! itself is abandoned/unused.

Re: Gmail doesn't always send the same mail twice
What I mean is, Gmail won't always let me SEND the same mail twice, FROM my Gmail account. Not TO my Gmail account from another provider. It's like it's detecting that I'm sending the same message again, so doesn't allow it -- even though that's my intention.
As for Yahoo, no thanks! Spam City. Try this: open a Yahoo account and then leave it. Spam will come in after a month or so! Did for me, anyway.

@IdeasVacuum
not true (about Yahoo) (well not in the UK anyway
I run a couple of mailing lists - the most common public domains are:
1) Hotmail
2) gmail
3) NTLWorld / VirginMedia
4) BT Internet
Yahoo is so far down the list it barely registers - I wonder if WebMail preferences are *regional*
@kenmo
yes - based on my mailing list contacts with Yahoo email IDs I reckon over 87% are abandoned

- 100% Agree about Facebook though (from a personal perspective) I hate the new UI, and even more hate the volume of updates that come through about who is "looking forward to a great night out", "sending hugs", "going to the loo" - honestly I don't care - tell me about in person, stop <rant>trying to promote your miserable wannabe pseudo-celebrity lifestyle to the whole world</rant>
- I do like the Google+ GUI though - but maybe that's becausze noone is using it and it's free of the desperate facebook trivia

Re: Gmail doesn't always send the same mail twice
Exactly what I posted a solution for: open up another mail account from another provider and redirect everything to your gmail account. Now send from your GMAIL account to your GMAIL account over the redirecting account from ANOTHER provider.MachineCode wrote:What I mean is, Gmail won't always let me SEND the same mail twice, FROM my Gmail account. Re: Gmail doesn't always send the same mail twice
What the? I don't get what you're saying. Because my problem is, sending from my Gmail account doesn't always work for the same message, twice. So I fail to see how sending from one Gmail to another would solve that. The sent mail from Gmail 1 would still not get delivered to Gmail 2.DarkDragon wrote:Now send from your GMAIL account to your GMAIL account over the redirecting account from ANOTHER provider.

Re: Gmail doesn't always send the same mail twice
Are you trying to send the same message within a relatively short period of time?
It sounds like a feature on their mail servers that prevents accidental multiple-sends, similar to shopping websites which block identical orders placed within a minute or so.
Does modifying the email slightly, like adding blank spaces at the end, allow it to send?

I thought receiving the same mail twice doesn't work if you are sending to yourself.MachineCode wrote:What the? I don't get what you're saying. Re: Gmail doesn't always send the same mail twice
Sorry, I should've been more clear in my first post: when I said "All I'm doing is sending myself the same body text", what I meant was to a non-Gmail account, not to my Gmail account. So, I'm in Gmail, click "Compose", address it to (say) Yahoo, send it, then do this again but about a minute later; and this second email is never received in Yahoo, even though there are 2 x sent emails showing in Gmail's "Sent" folder. So it's like Gmail is just humoring me and pretending to send the second mail to Yahoo, when in reality it isn't. And no, it's not a Yahoo issue; it happens with ANY address that I send to from Gmail. This issue has been going on for about 3 months now.DarkDragon wrote:I thought receiving the same mail twice doesn't work if you are sending to yourself.

Re: Gmail doesn't always send the same mail twice
Tested from my GMail account online, sometimes the same result as you Machine Code, yet sometimes it does go through twice - it also sends itself back to GMail though I'm not aware of a setting for this. Success seems to require an interval between sends of a few minutes.
I tried GMail send again via Mozilla Thunderbird. GMail did then allow two identical mails through, send time about 1 minute apart. So that could be your solution.
