Re: Future UEFI Booting problems? - Curtesy of Windows 8
I can't see it being a problem - even the current Microsoft apps would fall foul if Secure Boot could not be switched off, so it is likely that most new PCs will offer the option, not forgetting of course that by far the majority of PCs that will be running Win8 are already on people's desks - MS certainly cannot afford to miss out on that chunk of the market.
It is a surprise that BIOS will still be there - there was much talk of redundancy before.

The irrational uninformed panic about the Windows8 signed boot process is both silly and boring. There are some reasons to be worried about UEFI replacing the traditional bios though, but the tabloids didnt notice yet.

C provides the infinitely-abusable goto statement, and labels to branch to. Formally, the goto is never necessary, and in practice it is almost always easy to write code without it. We have not used goto in this book. -- K&R (2nd Ed.) : Page 65

It is my understanding that only a OS is effected by Secure Boot and not "normal" programs...IdeasVacuum wrote:I can't see it being a problem - even the current Microsoft apps would fall foul if Secure Boot could not be switched off, so it is likely that most new PCs will offer the option, not forgetting of course that by far the majority of PCs that will be running Win8 are already on people's desks - MS certainly cannot afford to miss out on that chunk of the market.

The Linux Foundation:
https://www.linuxfoundation.org/sites/m ... tforms.pdf"Secure boot" ... offers the prospect of a hardware-verified, malware-free operating system bootstrap process that can improve the security of many system deployments. Linux and other open operating systems will be able to take advantage of secure boot if it is implemented properly in the hardware. This document is intended to describe how the UEFI secure boot specification can be implemented to interoperate well with open systems and to avoid adversely affecting the rights of the owners of those systems while providing compliance with proprietary software vendors' requirements.

LOL, I posted a thread about it on the PB forums two days before that story:
Windows 8 secure boot would 'exclude' Linux
Best wishes to the PB community. Thank you for the memories.

Can't see those programs running without an OS though.........It is my understanding that only a OS is effected by Secure Boot and not "normal" programs...
