Metro Apps, Microsoft to take 30%

"With the unveiling of Windows 8 at the Build conference last week, Microsoft set out plans to allow for two different types of software to be distributed for its latest operating system. The first is the traditional Windows desktop application using the typical Windows interface. The second is a new style of Metro app that is geared towards a touch interface and perfect for tablets.

What we have now also learned is that those Metro apps will be exclusively distributed through Microsoft’s own Windows Store. Microsoft has also revealed that it intends to take a 30% cut of every sale through the Windows Store putting it on a par with Apple and how the App Store functions."

Interesting strategy. Not sure Microsoft can assume what works for Apple will work for them.
Will this discourage some developers from developing a Metro app vs. a desktop app? Time will tell.

30% is a joke for either company to think anything they have done entitles them to that much of an application someone else developed. Distribution are probably so minescule for such large corporations, it sounds more like just another "pay to play" scheme.

This is extremely fair. I am glad to see MS is following Apple's lead and being "developer friendly". Unfortunately, with the percentages taken being so low, it will leave it open to the kiddies and you will see a large amount of crap in the Windows Store, just as you do the App Store.

If you want $2 for your app, you put it in the store for $3. Where is the problem?
This appstore-thing is quite different from oldie PC market, where you sell licenses
for your program for $199.

I have a Windows Phone 7 and i saw people complaining about the price when a game
costs $4 or $5 (for example Sonic 4). Its a different world.
It is the mass market and many people spend $2 or $3. $5 makes them complain. :D

All apps are checked automatically for security issues and i think also by humans,
before they get into the store. Its a quality control, and somebody has to pay for it.
If you code BS, your apps won't get in the appstore.

Anyway, i think very good developers can still become millionaires with the appstores.
Sonic 4 or http://babyloniantwins.com/ must be some of this mega-sellers.

Do you want to develop games for Windows, iPad, iPhone, Android, Android Tablets,
Windows Phone 7, Xbox 360, Linux, MacOS, the Web as well as more platforms in the future?
