As a paid registree maybe Fred should/could impliment a "key" for paid users etc, that way if any were released into the P2P comunity it could be tracked down....????

Re: Purebasic 3.80 on P2P!!
That should be no problem since PB can only be updated with the 2.9 Version *g*Tech-Man wrote:I've just come across someone sharing PB 2.8 while looking at a friends P2P program![]()
P.S.: As the Title implements this is a typo, but I couldn't resist
From the forum post describing it.....

I have posted a dummy file on the same network in order to hinder the spread/credability of itBack again with the latest version of the excellent programming language. This is probably the quickest BASIC programming language around. It has full native Windows API support plus 2D/3D support as well. Try it out because it's what I am programming with now, and I have tried many languages including Blitz Basic and Dark Basic.
Here's the link
Pure.Basic.v3.80.-.English.Full.-.xxxxxxxxxxx.xxx
No cracks or any crap like that. Just copy it where you want it and run the 'PureBasic.exe' file. This is the full version in case you hadn't already guessed.
I am the only source at the moment, and I have a monumentally slow connection, so please be patient....
This was going to happen sooner or later.. Hopefully it won't be that widespread.

Tech-Man: Using P2P and "complaining" about warez is like getting a porn-video complaining about nudes. Just my 2ct.
Good programmers don't comment their code. It was hard to write, should be hard to read.

Fred could put some kind of copy protection but it will never be 100% safe from P2P or any other form of file swapping/pirating. So you could look at a couple of ways .. any business has to take some sort of theft from their profit margins, as it is very common especially in retail outlets and software industry. As long as the growth of PureBasic is not stopped by this, otherwise measures should be taken to cap the loss of Freds profit.
Fred could do a CPU copy protection, so the software can only be used on a specific CPU, but this would be a pain in the ass. As I use a laptop and a PC for programming side by side (2 computers).
All in all, I think Fred should continue what he is doing and measure the increase in sales over time. If sales start to decline and pirating increases, then the proper measures should be taken.
I do like the idea of a 'key' and being able to track down where it came from as the community is small compared to other large user bases like VB which would be impossible to track.

hi
in my opinion there is no need to more protecting method cause every method you use will be broken in a minutes!
i'm from iran and here we don't have any copyright law! you can buy every softwares you want just for 1 dollor! but no one can use those great softwares as good as they must cause they didn't pay for them so they are confused and don't know the value of them.
i can buy every programming language just for 1 dollor but i prefered to register PB. and i think peopels all around the world are same as me!
those they want to play with softwares and those they want to learn and work with them. so let them to share and get the warez softwares they will not go any where!
so please don't waste your time on protecting methods, instead spend your time on improving PB documentation:)

Some copy protection (Even a simple key-based system) is better than none at all. We'll all have to wait and see what Fred comes up with for 4.X!

That is one way of looking at it for sure - those that would steal it weren't going to buy it in the first place...

there is no such thing as a definite copy protection system, with the number of hackers out there, they will definitely hack the software, take out the key, and spread the hacked version
purebasic 3.72 has been on the edonkey / emule network for quite some time, i have't downloaded it, but i expect it to be a full and complete working version
with a p2p network like donkey you simply cannot track down the source, in fact, anything you want is available on the p2p networks, and those on the donkey network are known to be complete and working
as to copy protections and keys: one of the best ways to protect software is include in a purchased version printed manuals, but that's a bit too costly
as an alternative, boards could be limited to registered users with certain info only available on those boards, but that would leave a bad impression on reviewers and people 'sampling' the language
so, only by including a code, somewhere hidden in the code, and different for every registered user, one could try to do some sort of copy protection, but then mainly aimed at trying to track down the culprit who distributed the original
then again, he / she may not be responsible him / herself because someone else *stole* a copy...
i think the best way to do it, is make the download only possible by presenting a proper key online, then an upload could only be done by a registered user, and the users ip could be tracked down, next to that a constant monitoring would have to take place on sites such as astalavista.box.sk to track down and eliminate illegal codes
again, this does not stop a good hacker, but such is life... at least one can stop easy updates...
