I think, this is a realy interesting walk through Windows Changes and Update Compatibility within the last 20 Years:

Good to know Doom 2 will work if I eventually upgrade to Win 7... 8)

I vaguely remember using Windows 3, but 95 is the first one I actually remember that specific installation screen!
