Game Coder Needed
I was not sure where to post this...here it is.
As a hobby I wanted to write a game, something which is more complete than many such games on the market - but know next to nothing when it comes to graphics/sprites. have written the code for a dynamically created universe with a functioning stock market which is also dynamic. Anyway I wanetd to see if anybody wants to team up to complete this game...it is a space trading / space combat possibly multiplayer game. I also have a stable network library ready.
email me on terence26 @ yahoo . com for more details or if you are interested

Re: Game Coder Needed
These games a lot, why make another one, you would not sell, can not compete with the pros. I do not know of any decent games made by an amateur.

Re: Game Coder Needed
There's no reason for this kind of attitude. There are many amateurs out there creating games that are doing well. Just look at the games being made on mobile devices such as the iPhone and so forth. Anyway, without going into further detail, it can and is being done by smaller companies and amateurs.AndyLy wrote:These games a lot, why make another one, you would not sell, can not compete with the pros. Re: Game Coder Needed
Of course there is the kind of people who love to play games where chasing the ball behind square. Why not! I say that a homemade game will be interesting only to the author and a couple of friends.
IMRO, the only benefit is the experience received in creation of the program.

Re: Game Coder Needed
If you by 'amateur' mean that just by not earning your food as a 'employed' (e.g. professional) programmer, you mean that you can't make a buck and have fun at he same time?AndyLy wrote:I do not know of any decent games made by an amateur.
I don't agree. Sometime actually the idea and commitment is (sometime, a very small sometime...) worth more the a small army of programmer, animators etc..
If you know you have something to contribute, the needed know-how to do it and understand that it could take a long time to complete... think twice, check if there is a market, then think again and if your still certain - go for it!

The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today.

"chasing the ball behind square" lol
1- Do you know a little game called Worms... Worms2, Worms Armaggedon, Worms World Party, Worms Reloaded...well, it was first coded by an amateur then bought by Team17
2- Do you know Portal, Portal2... 2 guys coded a little game called Narbacular Drop, with this portal system, and now they work for Valve and Portal is one of the most amazing games around.
"I do not know of any decent games made by an amateur" ?
3- http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Produ ... 02585502a6
I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1 (have you ever heard of it?) This game was a selling record for the xbox live...
This is the worst game in my list, still...
"you would not sell"
"will be interesting only to the author and a couple of friends"
Yes, a couple of friends made by more than 54,655 users, only in xbox.
Well, that's a good start...
I love games, and the indies are my favourites!
If you don't know good indie/amateur games, you just haven't used google.
Keep coding!

Re: Game Coder Needed
Yeah. if the author is a genius or a team of talented, of course, they can create something new and interesting. New concept of the game, a new type of game, anything. If so (as in the example of Worms or Portal), I'll be the first one to support them. But be realistic: how chances this event?
"I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!" I do not think the original game, even this game does not count. Such game-interpretation of old side-scrolling games (such as Dandy). This is a disposable product, who played tested reaction is better: you or his grandfather and forgotten. This is not the way the creator of games.
And by the way, the author of threads talking about creating games based on existing, that is about something like a remake, we are not talking about creating a new one.
"I love games, and the indies are my favourites!"
Yes, the indie games often have the original, and the authors are not restricted to the boss or the rules, but I was originally trying to say that the author must be a realist. I looked at several major forums creators of game-90 percent of projects come to an end after inventing "original" plot and drawing two or three images.

I keep trying. (http://video.yandex.ru/users/spaceminers/view/14/)

Yes, we must be realist... but not pessimist!
I myself have made a lot of little games, haven't finished a good one, but they all helped me as knowledge and inspiration...
You must start with the will and an idea. You must make the first step. Maybe you will be successfull, or not, but you will never have success if you don't try.

Re: Game Coder Needed
Have you heard of Minecraft? That is a game made by an Amateur and Notch didn't have a team until after his breakthrough. Granted, it is unlikely that he will have that kind of success, but a lot of Amateurs made good games and started living of it. You can't succeed if you don't try and even if you don't succeed, it is still a much better way to spend your time than watching TV and let your brain rot.
Braid, World of Goo, Bridge Builder... there are a ton of examples that you actually can earn money on a small budget title and maybe that isn't even his motivation. Maybe he just wants to make the game he always wanted to play himself. Dwarf Fortress might be a game that will never earn a buck for its writer but it is great fun for a lot of people.
Heck, Diner Dash and the likes showed you can even make money not being talented.

Huh? DF has earned the developer tens of thousands of dollars (in donations though, not in sales).Zaphod wrote:Dwarf Fortress might be a game that will never earn a buck for its writer but it is great fun for a lot of people.

Re: Game Coder Needed
Oh, I didn't know that. It certainly doesn't have much mainstream appeal

Re: Game Coder Needed
I think you'll find that Worms wasn't an original concept game at all - it was just an extension of the standard turn-based ballistic combat game - Scorched Earth anyone? Also, an important point you seem to be missing: it's FUN to code these games - what does it matter if it is only of interest to a handful of friends? if you are only interested in popular products and market share, why are you even using PB?
