Using IE or FF for remote a PB Server EXE

Post by Kwai chang caine »

Hello at all

Is it possible to use Internet explorer, or firefox, Opera, etc.... for sending order at an exe PB server.

In one world, is it possible to replace the client PB by a WEB navigator ???
With the navigator sending order, a little bit like the PHP.exe behaviour :D

Thanks and good day

Hi.
I think I know what you mean, and if it is like I think - I use this all the time.
Its just setting up a server on a port (normallt not 80), and then listen to incomming requests. I usually take the "atomic webserver" example when I build my server side programs. Its good because of several reasons:
1. You can call the program via a webbrowser, like http://127.0.0.1:5000 for port 5000. You can also use this for doing specific events like reboot server. I can always just do a http://127.0.0.1:5000/reboot to reboot my servers or a http://127.0.0.1:5000/reload to reload data. I can also get some statistics this way (how many requests, time idle, IP address etc).
2. From the client side (purebasic program) you can always rely on URLdownloadtofile_() api call, which is error checked nice and works all the time (a bit slow... but still).

Thanks a lot jesperbrannmark 8)
I go to take a look on this ATOMIC SERVER code :D

At the beginning, i search how i can catch the information from APACHE
Because PHP can take the code from APACHE, read it, and if he see the <? ?>, he know the code is for him :D
And i say to me, perhaps it's possible to adding another tag like this <Pb Pb> for APACHE send code to my PB EXE

So my first idea is, create a little PHP like..... :idea:
But it's too difficult to understand how APACHE and PHP talk between then :(

Kwai,

It is very easy once you know how. I may have already posted this code somewhere else.

Your input parameters are passed (using the get method in this example) in the variables num1 num2 and oper for the operation to be performed (addition, subtraction etc..) Save this as calc.html in your main directory of your website then just call it as normal YourWebsite.com/calc.html

CALC.HTML

Code: Select all

<div align="center">
<body bgcolor="black">
<font face="verdana" color="white">
Calculator Module<br>
<form method="get" action="/cgi/calc/calc.cgi">
<input type="text" name="num1" value="">
<br>
<input type="text" name="num2" value="">
<br><br>
<input type="submit" name="oper" value="Add">
<input type="submit" name="oper" value="Sub">
<input type="submit" name="oper" value="Mul">
<input type="submit" name="oper" value="Div">
</form>
</font>
</body>
</div>
The input parameters are read in by your webserver and made available to your PureBasic program through an environment variable called QUERY_STRING. Compile and save this as calc.cgi put it in a directory called /cgi/calc/

CALC.CGI

Code: Select all

EnableExplicit

;- CGI Example. A simple HTML Calculator in PureBASIC
;  JackWebb 2009
;  PB 4.40
;  Abyss WebServer 2.6X2
;  WinXP SP3

Define Param$
Define Num1.D
Define Num2.D
Define Oper$
Define Result$

If OpenConsole()
  Param$ = "?" + LCase(GetEnvironmentVariable("QUERY_STRING"))

  Num1.D = ValD(GetURLPart(Param$, "num1"))
  Num2.D = ValD(GetURLPart(Param$, "num2"))
  Oper$ = GetURLPart(Param$, "oper")

  Select Oper$
  Case "add"
    Result$ = StrD(Num1.D + Num2.D, 2)
    Oper$ = " + "
  Case "sub"
    Result$ = StrD(Num1.D - Num2.D, 2)
    Oper$ = " - "
  Case "mul"
    Result$ = StrD(Num1.D * Num2.D, 2)
    Oper$ = " * "
  Case "div"
    Result$ = StrD(Num1.D / Num2.D, 2)
    Oper$ = " / "
  EndSelect

  PrintN("content-type: text/html")
  PrintN("")
  PrintN("<html>")
  PrintN("<head>")
  PrintN("<title>Calc.exe</title>")
  PrintN("</head>")

  PrintN("<body>")
  PrintN("<b>HTML Calculator</b>")

  PrintN("<pre>")
  PrintN(StrD(Num1.D, 2) + Oper$ + StrD(Num2.D, 2) + " = " + Result$)
  PrintN("")
  PrintN("REQUEST_METHOD  : " + GetEnvironmentVariable("REQUEST_METHOD"))
  PrintN("QUERY_STRING    : " + GetEnvironmentVariable("QUERY_STRING"))
  PrintN("</pre>")

  PrintN("</body>")
  PrintN("</html>")
  CloseConsole()
EndIf
End
The difference between GET and POST (put) methods is that GET goes to the environment and POST goes to STDIN which is the system console (think keyboard)

Hope that clears things up for you,
Jack 8)

EDIT: I had said PUT in place of POST. Even though put and post mean the same thing, POST is the terminology that is used.

Hi kcc,
i thought you wanted to make a server in pb, and a client in php, to talk to each other...

in that case you could have a pb server running, and use php sockets functions to connect to it :) (php, jsp, asp, etc)

In fact, i search several method for remote a PB server without PB client

I'm very interesting by PHP, and his behaviour.
How PHP take the HTML code for searching his <? ?> tag ..

Surely APACHE send to PHP the full page of HTML, and i don't know how
JackWebb give to me his splendid tips 8)
Is it this method it's using between APACHE and PHP ???

@JackWebb
Thanks a lot for your splendid code 8)
But i have a problem, that don't works :(
I have put the EXE in my APACHE folder : "C:\Program Files\Apache2.2\cgi-bin\calc\calc.cgi" and nothing
So i have changing in HTML code "/cgi/" to "cgi-bin" and always nothing
I have put in EXE two msgbox one at the beginning and nothing, so apparently the EXE is not launching
Perhaps a bad line in Httpd.conf ???
#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file. It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do. They're here only as hints or reminders. If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path. If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "C:/Program Files/Apache2.2" will be interpreted by the
# server as "C:/Program Files/Apache2.2/logs/foo.log".
#
# NOTE: Where filenames are specified, you must use forward slashes
# instead of backslashes (e.g., "c:/apache" instead of "c:\apache").
# If a drive letter is omitted, the drive on which httpd.exe is located
# will be used by default. It is recommended that you always supply
# an explicit drive letter in absolute paths to avoid confusion.

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path. If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
# at a local disk. If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
# httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "C:/Program Files/Apache2.2"

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 127.0.0.1:80

Kwai,

The extensions have to match. The HTML is calling calc.cgi but only calc.exe exists.. Rename calc.exe to calc.cgi or change in the HTML the line /cgi-bin/calc/calc.cgi <-to-> /cgi-bin/calc/calc.exe. I can't help you much with Apache because I don't use it, I use Abyss. But your httpd.conf appears to be ok..

Let me know if that works for you,

Yeeeeesssss !!!!

Thanks a lot JackWebb that's works fine now :D

In fact the error is in the adress in the HTML page

I have adding the localhost like this:

Code: Select all

<form method="get" action="http://localhost/cgi-bin/calc/calc.exe">
Now, for good understanding, your code is for launching an exe in the CGI folder
But for PHP.exe, is it the same behaviour ??

When a HTML code is sending by the navigator, APACHE passing it at PHP for reading and finding <? ?> tag, right or not ???
And if PHP find his tags, he execute the code between his tag <? ?>, right or not ??

But how APACHE sending to PHP, what is the method ????
Is it with the environnement variable ????
Is it with your method ???
Is it with Socket ????
Or another method ???

Kwai,

PHP can be embeded into Apache (mod_php), thus allowing the server (Apache) to act as the interpreter. Or it can be setup as a CGI application where PHP is in complete control of the script. With a purebasic application, an embeded script would be beside the point since the EXE is compiled and linked (no script to execute). When Apache see's <?php (inline coding) it knows that is the beginning of a script. If you wanted to do that with a compiled PB app, you could use SSI (server side include) the result is similar but the method is totally different. Think of SSI as the RunProgram() function of PB. Many methods can be used with PHP including the same exact methods that you would use for a PB app. So to answer your question. yes and no! :lol:

Graph,

When you say render, are you talking about rendering HTML or an image? Theoretically, anything you can do in PHP you can do in PureBasic. All you need is the routines to do what you want (lots of coding).. PHP already has all the routines to do what you want. It was designed from the beginning to include everything a coder would need to build webs. Still, I like using PB to build web apps. :D

Thanks a lot for your good explanation 8)

Decidedly, a friend talk to me about SOCKET, and i don't know it :shock:
You talk to me of SSI :shock: :shock:
Apparently, they are numerous way to search :mrgreen:

It's right, it's really difficult to understand the real system PHP/APACHE :oops:
I go to search in the way you give to me, the "SSI" 8)

Again thanks and good day 8)

hi again Kwaï!

look cgi was designed first to web pages but now is used like .sh in shell small scripts for administration use or other.
why? cause any task on processor is like a new application opened in your computer and for 10000 users is meaning your processor get fire :P

use cgi only in admin area for scripts like to setting a dns, to ping ,to set a domain to a host,a subdomain ...dummies scripts are used by 1 person and not 10000.

or maybe for a reason like: you have a very speed broadband server connected to a high network and you have a stupid blog like facebook where stupids loose their time to talk about bulls*t* and somewhere in thei admin areea cause they uploading their photos and you want to do something more with their pics (to modify thei pics in case php have not gd installed to make more that you want)
other reasons i don't see ,look i am not idiot to flood a server with .exe apps.
the apache policies now is a complete server app perfect optimized , php too and mysql too,why to come me with a script that put the processor to 65 % use ? lol i am not stupid

Thanks for sharing the calc example JackWebb, very nice.

I have a question though for any experts: Would any web hosting companies allow the use of an exe file as cgi? Maybe a Virtual Private Server (VPS)?

I have a good idea for a website using a pb exe for the cgi, but like freepurebasic says, 10000 people using the website is going to kill your server.

Yes i know that, but there are surely a way to worling with APACHE like PHP do.
Just catch the HTML page sending by the client.

The example of JackTheWeb is super cool, and i surely use it a day, but at my mind it's more for use CGI like you say, or launch EXE with navigator.

My question, is how APACHE/PHP exchange their data among themselves ..it's a real mystery :cry:
They are perhaps a way to exchange the data by the same way between PB.exe and APACHE ??
