Need help with a DVD image [SOLVED]

Hi everyone! I hope everyone is doing well.

I just recently downloaded The Witcher 2 from Direct-2-Drive (www.direct2drive.com where I had pre-ordered it.

Since I ordered the Premium edition one of the files I downloaded was an ISO and MDS file of a DVD about the making of the game so I burned it to a DVD to watch on my TV. It didn't work, the DVD player simply said the disc was incompatible. I tried it in my computer and Windows Media Player would play it but without any video, just audio.

I decided to look at the DVD files and the image file to try and figure out what the problem was and discovered that instead of *.VOD files, the VIDEO_TS folder had *.VOB files. The only place I had ever seen *.VOB files before was on DVD-RAMs I had used in my DVD recorder to record some shows on. There are also *.BUF, *.IFO and *.LAY files in the VIDEO_TS folder.

Does anyone know what I need to do with this image to get a DVD I can play on my stand-alone DVD player/recorder?

How would a DVD decryptor help here?

I don't believe the DVD image is encrypted, I believe the files are the wrong type.

Trust me. This program creates ISO images from the filetypes you describe and it will serve your purpose. Whether they're encrypted or not at read time is irrelevant.

Btw, the filetypes are as I would expect to see. Once again, please. Just trust me.

OK, I'll try it, I've made several coasters already, one more won't make a difference unless it works.

I hope it will preserve all the menus and such because there are a lot of files so I suspect there's a DVD menu system too.

Some DVD players will play dvd-r and dvd-rw but not dvd+r or dvd+rw. Some play just the opposite. You'll have to read your players manual to see what it accepts. I've always used DVD Decrypter myself without any issues. Those VOB files are normal and are usually in a VIDEO_TS folder once burned to disc. Some DVD writable disc are junk and have issues. I always look for disc that were made in Japan.

One of my attempts was to extract all the files from the ISO image, then use Nero Burning Rom 6 (the best version they ever released) to reassemble and burn the video disc, but when I started adding the files to the VIDEO_TS folder Nero came back with almost every file saying that it could not be put in the VIDEO_TS folder. I've never seen that before and I have ripped and copied a few DVDs in my time so that kind of tells me there's a problem with the files.

I may end up trying to get a refund from Direct-2-Drive and just go buy the retail box set which I'm sure doesn't have this problem. I think the publusher (CD Projekt RED) screwed up and gave Direct-2-Drive the wrong file.

I've never had this kind or this much trouble burning a DVD image before.

I wouldn't try to extract the files from the iso. Just use DVD Decrypter and you should be able to select your iso file from there and then it will properly burn the image to disc. Hope that helps.

VOB are for DVD Video. VOD stands for Video On Demand and is most likely a Divx format. Your DVD player might not except Divx media.

My take on this is as Netmaestro has said. It is a long time since I bothered to rip a dvd but from memory I used to use dvddecryptor & save to my hdd, then I would run these files through another program called dvdshrink to create the new dvd. This always worked 100% for me.

I dont think that .VOB is the problem. Actualy many DVD's use VOB's.
Have you contacted Direct-2-Drive about the problem? Maybe there is something wrong with the image.

Well, well, well.... I stand corrected...

I got curious and decided to look at one of the few DVDs in my collection, and looked at it. This is an original DVD manufactured by the studio, it's not a rip. The AUDIO_TS folder was empty as seems to be the case for most DVDs, and here is a director listing from the VIDEO_TS folder:

All this time I had thought the content was in *.VOD files, yet here they are in *.VOB files!

I guess it's been a long time since I ripped a DVD. For my own collection 99% of the movies available aren't worth watching once, much less owning them and of the other 1% that are worth seeing once a very few are worth seeing more than once and a few of those are worth owning which I do by buying them legitimately. Any ripping that I do is either for a very good and trusted friend or for myself to play on my Zune while traveling and once I've watched it, I'll delete it.

Anyway here back to the downloaded DVD ISO image file I downloaded. again the AUDIO_TS folder was empty and here is the directory listing from it's VIDEO_TS folder:

So now all I can figure is that the DVD was made with a codec that my DVD player doesn't support. I wondoer if I'd have the same problem with the retail boxed set making that, not an option either.

I feel like an idiot now for not seeing this sooner... especially now that I've discovered that Windows Media Player will play it so I guess I'll just watch it on my PC, though I would have prefered to watch it on the TV.

Still give dvdshrink a try. I would bet it will format to make it useable on your dvd player
