Just a thought, but rather than dividing development effort between the Windows and Linux platforms, why not just code for the Windows platform and test releases against WINE?

But isn't Wine a Windoze emulator? One could ask that question in regards to all compilers. Why not just write Windoze compilers and then run the executables on Linux under Wine. The obvious answer (to me, at least) is that it is better (faster, more reliable, less complex) to run native code where the option is available.

Wine Is Not an Emulator!

There are plenty of *nix based languages that run on Windows using a ported *nix GUI library (TK, GTK, Fox, call them cross platform if you must). Why not the other way round?

I do wonder how much extra effort is involved in supporting both the Win/Linux platforms, and how much work would be saved by going the WINE route. I imagine that it would become a matter of developing for Windows and WINE, and that WINE would still require a significant amount of work to accomodate. But, I don't know that for sure. I also worry that features for Windoze would get left out because of a lack of support in WINE? Possible?

I only have questions, no answers.

Thanks for not jumping down my throat on the emulator issue. I walked right into that one.

OK, I couldn't resist the bate any longer: it's simple, we program on Linux because it's *not* Windows. So if Fred said bye-bye Linux, we (at least me) would say bye-bye PB.

Embrace and Extend has always been one of Microsofts most powerful weapons. WINE is using the same principle against Redmond.

Is it really that important which library is being used under the hood?

there is Unix emulators for windows why not just make the Linux version and windows can use an emulator. oooo thats right windows trying to run a real OS under emulation can you say fatal system erro ctr-alt-del reboot
try again and again and again... Linux people don't want to program for windows we want to program for linux. so must must remember that if linux is canceled then what next .. and fred would loose a lot of devoted people on the linux side is pb for linux was canceled we might as well program in GCC

I want a real linux version, not a WINE compatible one. Why not use VMWare then ? It's already running
