Hi sphinx,
Ahh, thanks for the links...
I did not read too deeply, but it seems there are clampdowns on public protest, and obvious restrictions of governmental criticism.

What changed to create the current rioting?
Is there a single trigger?
Tunisia maybe?

...side note...
In America, our last big political riot was due to the LA Police beating of a minority caught on tape.
1992 - Los Angeles riots/Rodney King riot, April–May (Los Angeles, California, United States)
This was really bad in our history of justice. The leaders at that time, out of fear of more rioting, chose NOT to prosecute obvious criminals caught on tape, beating innocent people and causing vast property damage.

A note regarding this former event. Rioting is not the same as protesting.

I knew an individual (a minority) whose family was left destitute for 7 years because their place of business was destroyed in the rioting (and excluded from insurance coverage). I also knew others who considered participating in sympathetic riots of a similar nature in other locations that were almost twice the distance away as Tunisia is from Egypt, which is strange for a condition that manifested itself clearly in a certain locality with limited evidence elsewhere.

As in most places, there are many forces at work in Egypt. As I learned from the examples above, all who want change are not necessarily good even when the things that need to be changed are bad. My hope is that the changes are good for Egypt and that Egyptian citizens are allowed to make a positive influence of humanity in their country and its surroundings.

I absolutely agree.
I cannot fathom the quantity of protests that occur here in the US.
Riots though are a break from society's rule of law and must be dealt with swiftly.
Either the government squashes and negotiates terms.
Or the perpetrators overthrow and negotiate terms.
Else, there is pandemonium, and that is no safe, fun place to live. :(

If that happens you can say goodbye to Democracy and say hello to Sharia.

Well, it is supposed to be a free and honest election and it is the people decision to choose them or not.
Also who said Sharia is not Democracy....Islam is the origin of Democracy, do not take my word for it but read more about true Islam and you will find out that.
Do not talk about Bin laden and the likes because they do not represent Islam exactly like Ku Klux Klan does not represent Christianity.

Anyway I do not want to change the main subject but if the future is worse then at least we tried so the history will save that for our sons not to blame us!

1- The last parliament election was totally fake (97% for Mubarak and his party, although 2005 election was lower than 50% even with fake too but they succeeded to include freelance senators to their party so they reached over 70%, Muslims Brotherhood had around 22% of the chairs)
2- The death of Khalid Sai'd and Sayed Belal in police station you can imagine what caused their death.
3- When Mubarak took the power in 1981, 1$ = 1.1 L.E and now 1$=5.75 L.E before this revolution
4- Many other things like the wheal we import is courrpted (Causes Cancer), the water is rubbish....etc

the water is rubbish
And no government is going to fix that... the pipes are ancient and many portions were sealed with lead... ALL would have to be replaced and the cost of replacing infrastructure is horrendous; not to mention that the contracting for such an undertaking would lead to ALL NEW graft and corruption in the government...

where are y'all etting your wheat from? Chernobyl? how can you infect wheat to cause cancer? is it spoiled?
Binarily speaking... it takes 10 to Tango!!!

Wheat does not cause cancer. Toxins do. There are claims of Turkish wheat exported below cost and infected with fungi that produce cancer causing toxins.
Ouch! You definitely want to buy American in this case sphinx!

This is a miserable try of the corrupted regime to calm down people but they have to go away first, honest election happens and the new regime (from all parties and political powers) do what he sees right for the Egyptian nation.

Right and that's what I meant but I am not sure from where exactly the corrupted regime imported it from.

We were supposed to be the land of wheat of all time and a big safe for the whole world when the famine happened at the time of Prophet Joseph (PBUH)
Anyway we will import it until we recover our health, I hope!

Beware the unintended consequences of a "higher authority's" decision over your life.
Some even suggest this to be intentional.
I tend to believe the latter, since cancer from DDT is a far slower and random killer than Malaria.
