iPad -> Alternatives?

What I find pretty amazing is that there is no such thing as an EEE-touch. I mean, the netbook costs perhaps 300 bucks, so a touchbook (c2010 blueznl ) minus the keyboard minus moving parts but with a touch screen shouldn't cost much more, run WinXP / Win7, and last 8 hours just like its netbook brethern.

The second thing that leaves me wondering is why there isn't a netbook / touch book with a simple cheat 'cradle', so you can easily grab and store the netbook, just to charge it. (Think about the old BlackBerry cradles etc.) Such a cradle wouldn't need any other interfaces, just a piece of plastic with two metal spots to charge the touchbook batteries.

I'd buy one immediately.

With my daughter heading off to college I thought a bit about getting her an iPAD, but typing on it is a chore and it is not expandable and it's really expensive for the data packages here in USA.

I got her this instead for $200, and she can't put it down. She carries it in a purse to all her classes!

$200 is cheap, but indeed netbooks are often good enough, I have an Asus 1201AH which serves me fine.

I saw somewhere (maybe YouTube) Hanvon are about to release two models and they'll both be running Windows 7 so they'll be proper computers rather than just puffed up media players.

I only found out the other day that most Sat Navs run on Windows CE, some of them even give you direct access to the OS so you can install apps. This one's got a 6.2 inch touchscreen and it's a media player too for under £80 (fob China): http://www.chinavasion.com/product_info ... ce-access/

I have an Android phone, and a cheap iPad clone running Android too, and I really like both of them.

The iPad clone has a cheap screen, so the next one will be the same thing, but with better specs and with the same Android OS, which IMHO is an extremely friendly and functional system.

So my advice is to look for a techically advanced device running Android, and forget about Apple. I have a feeling Android will be everywhere (in your TV for example) and its market share is rising, and for a good reason.

With an Android iPad, you can easily use your own apps on it developed with their super simple App Inventor system, or sell the apps through Android Market.

The Samsung Q1EX is one of the best iPad alternatives. It uses an x86 and runs Windows XP.

There is no alternative to the iPad, there really isn't. Nothing else comes close to the ease of use and software available.

Try one and you'll see.

The issue is price, why should a netbook minus keyboard minus movable parts with only a touch screen added suddenly cost twice the price of a regular netbook, and last only half the time on battery? That's silly.
