New arrivals folder

Got an idea for enhancing PureBasic? New command(s) you'd like to see?

New arrivals folder

Post by blueznl »

The number of spambots is beginning to annoy me, 1 post, and they're gone again. Of course a captcha would fix part of it, but another solution might be to give newcomers read rights only, except for a 'newcomers' folder. If they've posted 5 messages in there, then they are allowed elsewhere in the forum... either that, or a doublebarrel shotgun to the head.

If that Newcomers folder was to become littered with penis enlargement adverts, then how many of us would even go into the newcomers section?.. Which means that none of the new comers would get a response, and as such, they would less likely come back.

Personally I think each new comer should have to introduce themselves first in a dedicated section, and upon an admin or a mod reading there introduction, they can be elevated into a group that enables them to read and write to the rest of the forum.
Thanks!

I think a better captcha would help.

I think it is fine. The amount of spam here is very low. We'd probably have more work "approving" each new user than we have with deleting spam right now.

Hi,
The spam is surprisingly low. Why not let the community do the work for you? Add a "Report as Spam" button to the forum. Then with enough "votes" it gets moved automatically into a folder of ill repute. :)

that's the exclamation point on the bottom right of every post :P
(although I don't think it automatically gets moved, just a moderator is notified)

I'm feeling there are more and more spam users logging in. I mean the spam posts are getting intelligent and harder to make out so browsing the forum isn't what it used to be anymore.

Doesn't the new phpBB has some inbuilt solutions against it? Like captchas or easy math questions for registering etc.
If any of you native English speakers have any suggestions for the above text, please let me know (via PM). Thanks!

I put one in my old forum thad had questions like what is the colour of grass, or what is the last letter in the alphabet, etc Worked great.

I did an update to phpbb and it took out the system. I left it for a while and within 2 hours there were about 100 spams on the site and it had also been hacked!
