Myself, I would not allow it installed on any computer I own, Mac or PC. Your only possibly, at some point, compromising your own computer. It is more exploitable then you would imagine. Its basically one big exploitable bug ridden trojan that runs in the background all the time (unless you shut it down) and sends and receives information as it wishes even when its not being used for gaming. It seems to be designed as a DRM application for the whole computer (even though its not acting as that right now.) and not just the game its self. There will be a time coming when you will not even be allowed connection to the 'net without some companies DRM type software in constant communication with the DRM gods somewhere, and the eaisiest way to spread this is through games requiring it because it seems so innocent.

I like Steam, finally I can buy games online and download them at whichever computer I feel like using without any bloated DRM shit sneaking around on my computer! (at least that did not came with any game I bought) And if I don't want Steam to start with windows I can simply choose so, and NO DRM shit runs in the background at all like SFSxOI is suggesting. It also helps you connect with other players and find multiplayer games, it is simply the best system (in my opinion).

And exploitable? What the hell... you mean a hacker can compromise my computer if I got Steam? Then show me some examples!

I never said it was DRM, I only said it seems to be designed as a DRM application. I never said that DRM was running in the background, it's Steam running in the background via its background processes. Any piece of software that needs to connect to a remote server for permission to run an application and then grant that application permission to run and be used is DRM orientated. Its an exploitable piece of software, one example; The Steam related executables have a local privilage escalation vulnerability which is particularly bad because by default Steam starts atomatically with the computer. That means as soon as an administrator logs in (or a person in the administrator group)... game over because any thing that was waiting can seize control of the machine from there. Supposedly fixed, isn't. There is a bug that allows a remote Steam "friend" your communicating with to get your Steam ID and password when you join a game on the same server as them and are still communicating with them. Supposedly fixed, isn't. if someone lifts your username and password it's the equivalent of someone walking off with all your game cd's/DVD's. There is an exploitable bug that allows a remote connection to your steam directory with read-write-delete privilages, exploitable from server side to the client machine. Supposed to have been addressed and Valve said it did not exist, it does. There are others and i'm not going to run through each and every one, and no, i'm not going to post code examples showing exploits or links to things showing exploits.

Steam has many features but first and foremost it is a DRM system designed to allow a program to run on only one computer at a time. Plain and simple.

And what happens when you have no Internet connection and want to play a game? If Steam can't access your account to verify you have the right to play the game you're out of luck. And that goes for all the games you've bought through Steam! Sure there's an off line mode that works well, big catch is you have to be on line to set it because it has to be able to cache your game licenses which can only be done while on line.
