when you rightclick on a pb file in the explorer and chose "open with", you can chose "PureBasic Development Environment".
this description does not carry any version information. it would be nice if it did.
strange to say, defaultwise the explorer opens a .pb with NotePad, tho the Z Icon appears in the list.
furthermore, I have 4.20, 4.30, 4.40b3, 4.40 and 4.41 installed, ALL of them carry the /portable flag in their shortcuts and have their own .prefs
but I only can chose ONE environment there, what annoyingly is 4.30
my wish is that you put the version number into the description there, that I could chose "PureBasic DevEnv V 4.40" in this dialogue.
any additional help how to re-connect the .pb to the IDE again without un-portable any version is appreciated.

Hi Kaeru,
changing the 'open' -setting could be done unter Explorer: Menu\Extra\Folderoptions Tab: Filetype choose 'erweitert' (extended?). There you can change the commands and set the default one which is taken by dbl-clicking a file.
I prefer to use FileTypesMan to quickly jump into the registry and change it there. And here you may easily change the standard-value - "PureBasic Development Environment" to your own taste.
I'm unsure what you mean with 're-connect'. Via 'open with..' you can surf for any application to open with and set the flag to 'use as default' before supplying - then .pb will be opened with that app. Besides you won't be able to connect this to a link with portable switch. (I've never tried.) That's why the only version I've left as installed is v. 3.94, the last one that is able to find it's local .prefs itself, and all the other versions I install - savecopy- and uninstall before first usage. This way my preferred settings never get mixed up.
I hope I got you right somehow
greetings ~ Vera

Re: Please add the Version Number to the "Title"
thanks for linking FileTypesMan. I'll have a look at it.
... besides it should not be too have to change it in the Registry on my own if I knew what and where.
yes I forgot the types management in the folder options, but also there I only can chose from the registered list of the "open with" context, and not an EXE in a folder.
as I said, the only version listed in the "open with" context is the 4.30, the others just don't appear.
and if they appeared, I could not distinguish them because they are all named the same.
thus I need a way to name them differently.
I already made a remark about this problem one or two years ago,
in the meantime I avoided the problem by browsing the folders containing .pb files directly with the IDE.
it's a bit inconveniant if you examine old backups searching for old sources.
I'll definitely have to take a look at the Registry settigs. thanks for that hint.
it's an EXE located in a folder on a permanently mounted drive.
it should be meaningless to windows if I prefer to call it with "/portable" as parameter or not.

I don't understand this.Vera wrote:Besides you won't be able to connect this to a link with portable switch. (I've never tried.)

Re: Please add the Version Number to the "Title"
below the flag 'always use this app' you'll find a browsebutton. Same as via contexmenu 'open with..', which would even be quicker to handleKaeru wrote:the types management in the folder options, but also there I only can chose from the registered list of the "open with" context, and not an EXE in a folder.

Same in the extended settings after choosing one of the 'edit/new.. buttons'.
I meant you cannot choose a *.lnk file. But then again I forgot that one may also append a parameter when editing one of the commands.Kaeru wrote:Vera wrote:

It's a bit strange, as you kept all versions as installed. But the again: 'open with..' - choose 'browse' and take any different app and it will by supplied to the extentions MRU-list and should appear afterwards in the list as well. Maybe it is realy due to the same default app-name that M$ takes them all as one? This case you could only try to fix this by changing the apps standard values.Kaeru wrote:the only version listed in the "open with" context is the 4.30, the others just don't appear

addendum
Makes me wonder that you must have changed, some time ago, the extension to open with NotePad. If so, you won't find the 'extended' button within the folder options as it would have been changed to 'reset'. Then you'd have to reset first to get back the other option.Kaeru wrote:defaultwise the explorer opens a .pb with NotePad, tho the Z Icon appears in the list.
As for the icon - it's assigned to the filetype.
yes - a codeviewing browser is really of needKaeru wrote:in the meantime I avoided the problem by browsing the folders containing .pb files directly with the IDE.

some further hints:
- you can define if 'open' / 'edit' / 'view' is the default command for pb-files (and of course the commands themselfs)
- remember the 'send to' menu as option, likewise a *.link on the desktop to drop files on (my favourite)
- you could assign global hotkeys to pass files (I do in connection with a clever launcher)
- you may also use CAV.exe (- CodeArchiv from purearea.net) for browsing (/ highlighted reading / copying / passing) as it reads in any codes within it's folder/ subfolder (unfortunately the GUI is a bit oversized)

in the meantime, when I started V4.02 to test an old code, the default app became 4.02, and when I wanted to change this, I again had two "PureBasic Development Environment" entries in the open-with list.
when I changed to V4.30 again, the second entry disappeared again.
it's a bit fishy when running more than one version of PB, even if using the "/portable" switch.
but especially in a community like this it's absolutely common to have more than one version installed.
how should we beta-test if it wasn't possible?
I wish Fred would put more regards in that issue.
giving the registry entry a version number would already help a bit!
thanks for that link, too.Vera wrote:ps: just in case you'll like a more powerful reg-tool try this one RegScanner

Re: Please add the Version Number to the "Title"
How about writing a simple browser with PB? It can be limited to browsing PB file types and have a row of buttons for "open with specific PB version". It could also have an info box for the currently picked file....

If it sounds simple, you have not grasped the complexity.
