Any computer collectors want a bargain? (SOLD)

Post by GeoTrail »

Update: The KayPro is now sold!

I have an old "dragable" computer, called KayPro II that I am thinking of selling to a collector. I haven't thought of a price but I'd like to get some offerings.
Here are some info about ths system:
It was released in 1982 and cost around $1.700USD
It has a Zilog Z80, 2.5 MHz CPU. 64 Kb memory, 9" green phosphor screen, it has a serial and Parallel port. Two internal 5-1/4" SS-DD 195K drives.
The operating system is CP/M, SBASIC.
As you can see from the pictures. It is a big, 15 kg, aluminium case with handle on the top, along with serial and parallel port. On/Off switch, fuse, power connector, keyboard connector and a dimming switch for the monitor. The computer is practically in mint condition. It starts up fast and runs really silently. Both disk drives work fine. And there is a bunch of floppy disks that accompanies the machine, along with some master disks.

And here are some pictures I just took:

looks interesting.

do you sell any books for it with it?
like a reference manual for SBASIC and one for Z80-ASM?

and what price do you have in mind? (PM if you prefer)
oh... and have a nice day.

I'm not sure if I have any books with it. I have to check.
About the price, I really don't have any idea of what it might be worth. But I'm sure a collector would be happy to get it. So I am open for bids.
Just remember, it has a weight of 15 kilograms without the disk set and cables, so the freight could be pricey. I would guess, but again, no idea.

yes I know the freight would cost a thing, and even more I would prefer a transport insurance, so that would be some extra.

... but I had a look into ebay, I it seems those machines are sold beyond my possibilities.
I could only afford a yard-sale price... I'm a collector but I'm not rich.
oh... and have a nice day.

Looks great, I bet those keys make a lovely sound.

I think its probably worth $300, but shipping would be damn expensive, maybe $50 within your own country, probably double that if you sell it internationally.

I have seen one of these before, at a university ages ago - very solidly built, obviously as reliable as hell, and it just looks cool. The alternative PC's like that were nicotine beige and clunky.

It kinda reminds me a little bit of the Einstein, a very rare but amazing piece of kit in it's time. I really liked the Einstein, it had a metal case with disk drive - but just built around the keyboard - the keyboard itself was brilliant. It was a lot like an Amstrad CPC 464, even ran some of the same games if I recall.

Good luck with the auction, hope someone buys it and puts it to use, not sure what for but it's great to see computers from almost 30 years ago working perfectly.

Wow, $300. I didn't think it would go for that.
Thanks for the tip btw, at least now I have something to go by if I get any bids.

Yeah, the keyboard makes a REAL keyboard sound. There is absolutely no rubber behind the buttons. Maybe I should make a video of me starting it up and showing that it actually does work perfectly.

Nice computer! :D (nice cat too)
I've been tempted to get myself an old computer lately  I want to know how the old days was...
My first offer will be 1000 NOK and I can drive by and pick it up myself.

Thanks Joakim.
Yeah, the cat.
My girlfriend got that cat about 2 weeks ago. It's only 15 weeks old and is bigger then most adult cats. It's mother is a main coon. A big ass cat, so I guess this one is going to be a big monster too.

Ok, I'll note the 1000 and keep you in mind. I just posted the machine on Finn.no (21012072) and the add will be active for 60 days I think.
If I haven't sold it by then, it's yours. Or whoever has the highest bid :)

What any smart guy would do I guess :P We'll see how far I'm willing to bid, but I guess I would feel ashamed to give too much for a 2.5 MHz computer... My geekyness should have a limit somewhere I guess.

Wow, a big ass monster cat could be nice to have... we have one ourselves!

Yeah, it's a high price per megahertz hehehe.

I also have a MacBook on Finn, and people are mailing and calling like freaking crazy hehehe.
I paid 4000NOK for it last summer I think and the bid has already come to 4.500 and that is just 2 hours after the add was approved.

Hehehe yeah, big cats are cool, but it is really lazy. Just sleeps all day. Kinda like me hehehe.
Our neighbors has a dog they call Bamse (Bear), and it is already now much smaller then the cat. He sure is going to have some fun when the snow disappears and we let him outside hehehe

Wow, nice.
I have an old Mac PowerPC or what it's called. But I think the PSU is broken. Maybe a PSU from an old Fujitsu Pentium II would work in there.
Would be great to fire that up again.

Cool. Do you have the tape deck for the C64 too? I remember my favorite game was Save New York.
If I find a C64 or an A500, or 600 with harddrive.

I'm not sure but I think it should be there...
I think the power supply units were out of order...
I had to find those old fuses to check them...
quite a while ago I really took care of my museum...

I think you should get Save New York for the C64 Emulator on PC, too?
oh... and have a nice day.
