Japanese Animation (as it is called here in the USA as Japanimation which is a silly word!) consists of most of the worst parts of the art form... Tentacle Porn, panty porn, grossout porn... very little of the great stuff like Macross/RoboTech or StarBlazers/Space battleship Yamato (the live action movie I really want to see!!!) Not even the violence toned down versions of Speed Racer/Gogo Racer

Or we get the live action japanese inspired bubblegum nonsense like Power Rangers (I have no idea what that is called in Japan and do not want to!)(Though usually the pink ranger is HOT!)
My favorite part of that show when they dragged it to America was that in the first series that I was forced to watch with my nephew the Yellow Ranger was a guy in Asia and they used a girl in the USA so when she "morphed" she became a boy... Thats quite a change!

Nowadays the black and white comic books are here... in english... but they are still slightly risque showig panties and breasts... Not that I really mind that... but I don't think the bookstores should provide free reading rooms for preteens to read that stuff!

Anime is often called 'manga' over here (yeah, I know that's wrong :-)).

I do watch it, and have watched a lot. Some of it was rather impressive, some of it predictable, some of it outright crud. Just like real life :-)

Thanks for these links. I'm too a great fans of animes/mangas. Personnally, I rank Studio Ghibli's animes (don't know if it can be in this category) far above the Disney's ones : original stories (not pale copies of old world tales), not Manichean, terrific work on animation. Really clever.

oh yes, I also love the work of Hayao Miyazaki, excellent modern fairy-tales...

and of course AKIRA by Katsuhiro Otomo, an absolute all-time classic!

Thanks for the links!

I also watched a fair amount of anime in my time...the imports in the early/mid 80s (ie. Robotech, Star Blazers) was what really got me into it. Being from Hawaii we got fairly easy access to many other Japanese series/movies from local stores that could import videos direct from Japan (there were several I watched that had no voice-over or subtitles so we could only watch and attempt to understand what was really going on).

I know you didn't want to know, but I'm going to tell you anyway...Power Rangers was based upon a Japanese live action series called "Gorangers" (with "Go" being the japanese word for 5). I actually got to see some of the original series back in the mid 70s through my elementary school library's media room. They also had Kikaida, Kamen Rider, and my personal favorite of the period, Rainbowman (who could change into 7 different identities with different powers)...all on old film reels so we'd watch the same episodes over-and-over-and-over... In the late 70's-early 80's a local TV station (that has long since shut down) which broadcast a lot of Japanese TV (including some great Samurai series) started broadcasting some of these so we got to see the whole series. Of course, watching them now is not the same, but back then it was exiting stuff... :)

Rainbowman sounds interesting...

I forgot to remember ULTRAman... that was on in the afternoon after school in Houston in the 70's... I later learned via the internet there was a whole ULTRAfamily!

Hikaru would run out in his space helment and point his sonic screwdriver to the sky and say something and.... ULTRAMAN!!!! (I remember one episode he got confused and pointed his fork instead!) :mrgreen:

Anime is the motion cartoon version. Manga is the comic book version. BTW Anime Rocks! Well not all of it of course as noted by others. Some of it is just plain stupid or poorly made. But Anime such as "Cowboy Bebop" or "Ghost in the Shell" are excellent examples of great Anime.
