Offline Forum?
Offline Forum?
Hi,
how big is the size of the forum?
I read, that there was the chance to download the whole forum in former days.
Any chance for this again? At least it would be cool to have the "Tricks 'n' Tips"-forum (and "Code, Tipps und Tricks"-forum from the German-board) offline....
thx

Re: Offline Forum?
I too would love to have an offline copy of the forum as well.

Re: Offline Forum?
It's very big (dump is 300 mb).
Re: Offline Forum?
for a lower traffic you can create a torrent.

That's an absolutely great idea!

We never did that.
Its a dumb idea anyway. Its just work to setup and clean it of personal info, then it wastes a lot of bandwidth and it will be outdated the minute you downloaded it so you will have to search online anyway, so whats the point? Besides, we can't know if all users would be fine with the idea of offering all their posts for a download.
Anyway, this is an "online" community after all

Re: Offline Forum?
Considering it's just a bunch of text I imagine 300mb would compress down to somewhere around 30-80mb using 7zip.
Future updates can be made as diffs so the additional bandwidth use would be minimal.

Re: Offline Forum?
But... in what kind of format would you distribute such a thing? I doubt people are going to install complete messageboards just to read some historical material
No matter how interesting all references to The Hoff are

Re: Offline Forum?
There was another thread about this which proved their IS a big interest in people having an offline copy. I am one of them. I don't see what the big deal is, in not doing it. As for people's posts being seen, so what? The posts are public material here anyway.
Re: Offline Forum?
This is an other compiler community that has some kind of offline forum database (http://www.powerbasic.com/support/forum ... 03116.html)
Very useful when used with a good search engine and if some good update method is provided

Re: Offline Forum?
If you really want it why not code a robot in PB to trawl the forums and make your own 'offline' copy

Re: Offline Forum?
Download it yourself using offline browser software ?
Re: Offline Forum?
Using an offline browser to crawl the PB forum would use a much, much greater amount of bandwidth than a compressed database.
Consider all of the images and html served up multiplied times the number of the posts on this forum.

Just realised you can't search through it without the db too
