So is Windows 95, yet PureBasic still supports it.

GIF if still used extensively everywhere. Please add the command as KCC asked, and also an encoder version. You can't deny that GIF is still a very common format. The basic list of common formats is: BMP, GIF, JPG, PNG, TGA, and TIF. Only GIF is missing from the PureBasic command set.

I compile using 5.31 (x86) on Win 7 Ultimate (64-bit).

Yeah, I've switched over to PNG a long time ago, and when possible I use PNG instead of JPG even on large images.

It's true that GIF is still used on the web. But it's slowly dying. PNG is much superior.
For animations MNG is much superior to GIF, but unfortunately not much used.

It's irrelevant if things are 'modern' or not, the question is always: are they still used? Well, there is still quite a bit of GIF around, so there is some reason. It's up to the PB devs to decide if they want to support ol' GIF or not. Frankly, I don't have much need for it, but then again, any additional image compatibility certainly can't hurt ;-)

> It's true that GIF is still used on the web. But it's slowly dying.

From what I've seen, I disagree. In fact, even most of the graphics in this thread are GIFs, except for some avatars. All the buttons are GIFs, as are the smileys and other icons. The Google home page uses a GIF logo. The Microsoft logo at http://www.microsoft.com is a GIF. Cnet's logo is a GIF. Heck, even the PureBasic logo at http://www.purebasic.com is a GIF, so even the team uses it. Not quite so dead after all, eh?

Anyway, regardless of how popular GIFs are these days, the fact is that there are plenty of old GIF compilations that warrant PureBasic reading them. For example, one of my apps has a picture viewer as part of its features. I can load BMP, ICO, JPG, PNG, TGA, and TIFs with it, all using native PureBasic commands. But to view GIFs, I need to use a third-party DLL. Yuck.

Since GIF has long been license-free, it would make sense to include it. As to why it hasn't so far, is anyone's guess. Saying "GIF is dead" is not a reason. Both Fred and Freak are great coders so it's not beyond their ability to add it. It remains neglected for reasons known only to them. Maybe it's just not such a high priority, but with the image lib supporting most other popular formats, then a low priority for GIF alone seems strange.
