No 'Windows Help' for Windows 7

Post by ignign0kt »

As some of you know, Vista and onward do not come with the Windows Help viewer. There are updates to download this from Microsoft for Vista and Server 2008, but there is no such thing for Windows 7 yet.
I'm looking for a way around this so I can use the win32 help file for PB.

Wow, that sounds crazy. I'm still on XP and have no plans on upgrading. I'll hold out as long as possible. While DX10 sounds nice I'm fine with DX9. That's the only thing that has made me think about upgrading. For a second anyway.

Sorry, I mean the .hlp file from Kale's website for win32 api.
Windows 7 is unable to read .hlp files without installing the Windows Help viewer, which won't be available until Windows 7 RTM

I don't understand how Microsoft thinks. They include compatibility mode for
older apps and Virtual PC etc, but take away basic ".hlp" file support for old
help files. Who's in charge there? I remember when I trialled Vista that
I had to download a separate file to enable ".hlp" support. The file is a mere
600 KB in size. Why couldn't they just stick that on the Vista install CD? Did
they run out of disc space? Maybe that file works with Windows 7 too?

I compile using 5.31 (x86) on Win 7 Ultimate (64-bit).

Yeah I know what you mean, why they didn't include it is beyond me.
And no, that installer for Vista does not work for Win7. Microsoft says there won't be a Help viewer until Win7 is RTM.
Until then, there has to be another way to view .hlp files ;\

RTM? o_O ..ready to move? ..read the manual? ..ride tombstick mine?

well, I don't think it's a reason for complaint when there are no installers for every little backward compatibility in a beta....
oh... and have a nice day.

Windows 7 isn't in beta. Latest build is a release candidate.
I'm not complaining MS hasn't released an installer for the Hlp viewer, it should be included in the OS.

Anyways since no one knows, whatever...
