Interested in buying PureBasic...

Post by DarkLord »

Hi everyone :)

I'm interested in buying PureBasic for application development and game development, but before I do take the plunge, I would like to know if I will be making a good investment.

How good is PureBasic compared to other development tools for application and game development? I'm im interested in using the OGRE engine and noticed PB supports this, how often is PB updated for OGRE?

Basically, I want to learn a language / use a development tool that I can create applications and games without ever needing to learn another language.

Could anyone provide any links to any commercial games or popular applications developed using PB?

Can PB deliver?

Many thanks for any help received.

I don't think you can go wrong adding PB to your tool kit.

PureBasic is a great choice, but then, you're asking in a PureBasic community,
so we're all biased. OGRE is updated from time to time. The most recent
was December 16, 2008 when full Unicode support was added for OGRE.

PureBasic isn't restricted to its own command list (libraries). You can call any
third-party DLLs (for example) with PureBasic, so if a feature in OGRE is not
yet supported natively, you can access that feature through DLLs instead.

As for a list of games, PureBasic (at this time) seems to be more used for
application development. But two of the better-known games are these:

Lethal Judgment -> http://www.bgames.org/gamesen2.php?id=30
Restricted Area -> http://www.restricted-area.net

Hope this helps! :)
I compile using 5.31 (x86) on Win 7 Ultimate (64-bit).

see http://purebasic.fr/english/viewtopic.php?t=36173 for various reasons why people love it.

Ogre updates in PB used to be a bit rare in the past. But starting with 4.30 (the current version) most of the process is automated, so new PB releases should come with the latest Ogre version in the future.

Yes, I have tried the demo and like it so far, but wanted to read opinions from the experienced users.

I may just purchase a copy today :)

Hi DarkLord, Welcome to the forums!

for commercial applications, I think Rook's POS is to mention:

... PB is a neat but powerful language for fast results.
Due to the lifetime update account, it's really worth the affordable costs.
oh... and have a nice day.

Your current options for 3D in PureBasic are: OpenGL (API), DirectX (API), Dreamotion3D, Irrlitch, PureGDK (DarkBasic Professional), Ogre, and Leadwerks (No headers yet, sm3 only).

If you're interested in developing games please have a look at PureGDK. It's a complete 3D engine and contains an excellent set of libraries for 3D applications:

http://puregdk.com
http://puregdk.com/index.php?f=examples
http://www.purebasic.fr/english/viewtopic.php?t=32366

See here for some examples I posted of games made using the same core engine:

http://www.purebasic.fr/english/viewtop ... &start=180

PureGDK is currently available for free while the new version undergoes beta testing to help test the modifications made for PureBasic 4.30 and DBP 7.1 (the engine).

Seriously i cant find anything better to invest your money (time and effort) than purchasing PB.
Its not easy at all to find when i make a better investment of $69 or $99 or what ever the price is now.

I decided to 'take the plunge' and purchase PureBasic, I really like the fact it creates small and compact exes - which is one of the main features I was looking for and I'm impressed with all the features it has to offer especially supporting OpenGL natively :)

Many thanks for everyones reply, I'm sure I will have lots of fun with PB :D
