Skybox texture files

Post by Onyx »

I found a few skyboxes that work fine in PB 4.30. I downloaded these from the internet.

I then decided to make my own texture files.

I have six JPG files I have created, that are 512 x 512 x 24 bit. They load into PB successfully as textures.

However, when I try to use them with the skybox function, I just get a white skybox. The JPG files are being loaded, but they are not being displayed properly.

Any ideas why the downloaded JPG files work fine, but the ones I created do not? I have looked over the image files but don't see any issues.

Are there others that have had issues getting skybox to display their textures? If so, has anyone succeeded in getting them to work?

JPG has multiple settings. additionally to the Quality-Level wich can be 0-100, you can toggle 'Color Subsampling' and 'Progressive'.
I don't know a tool to read and display those values for a given file.

and I'm not sure about the color depth the 3D commands expect.
perhaps your images have to be 16bit or 32bit before saving them as jpg.
the loader for textures out of 3D archives is a different routine from the JPEGImageDecoder used for Sprites and Images.
oh... and have a nice day.

Most things are the same

Kaeru:

Thanks for the reply.

I did check the resolution and bit depth with one of the files that work. Both of the sets of images are 512 pixels wide by 512 pixels high. Both are 24 bits for color depth (red, green, blue are each 8 bit).

As far as Color Subsampling and Progressive...does anyone know if the images used for a SkyBox MUST use one of these?

Does anyone know of a good JPEG file analyzer that will tell me what has been used to create a file? This may provide clues as to why my images don't work.

Another question - since PB uses OGRE 3D, can I call OGRE 3D commands myself? Could I try creating a SkyBox directly instead of using PB's command? If so, can someone supply code to do that?

Thanks to anyone who can offer assistance.

I found out the reason the texture files I was using didn't work. One of the files was named incorrectly.

Please note if you find that your skybox is displaying all white with no textures, you should check to make sure ALL of the files are named correctly. If any one file is named incorrectly, the entire skybox will not be displayed.
