And that may last for quite a while, I know many developers are staying with 32 bit software because it will run on both 32 bit and 64 bit systems. So there's no real urgency being felt for 64 bit versions of their software.

Even Microsoft is "guilty", they have 64 bit versions of windows but all their other applications are only available in 32 bit versions.

Could be, I think most people switch to 64 bit hardware for performance reasons such as fast clock speeds and multi-core capabilities. Not so they can run 64 bit software, because right now there really isn't any other than OSes and drivers.

Intel iMac support. This is the only feature I really really want and need. Everything else is fine...

I agree with the thought that some major upgrades or version revisions should have a small cost appended. Fred and co. not only need to buy groceries once in a while, but they deserve to be paid for a major job well done! A little extra money comes in nice when you want to buy yourself that spiffy Commander Future Space Watch and Camera Gadget around XMas time! 8)

I am sorry if that offends the free software crew out there. But I remind them that the biggest application I have written so far, in PB, is FREE for all users!

:D
Binarily speaking... it takes 10 to Tango!!!

How to free-software people pay the bills? Programming's not my day job but I guess it is theirs. Are they just independantly wealthy or they like living like bums? (I understand what they say from a technical point of view about open source etc, I'm refering to putting food on the table for the family kind of thing though)

Sounds like the IT version of chardonay socialism, preaching left wing ideas because you personally have lots of cash.

Or am I missing the point? :P

I know that a lot of people run 32-bit linux distros on their 64-bit cpu because the 64-bits distros are troublesome in various ways.

only 64 bit laptops for sale now

My laptop recently died, and I went shopping. Every store here had ONLY 64-bit versions of vista. I had to special order an expensive HP laptop with an XP downgrade to get what I wanted. 64-bit causes a lot of problems with drivers/peripherals, but expect most users to have it within 2 years.

Any proof? In my experience i've never encountered anybody who has ever had any problems running a 64bit OS. I've been running 64bit windows vista ultimate from release and Ubuntu 64bit from a few versions ago and again no problems, even with flash.

I think people are more afraid of change and keep making this stuff up. I'd be very very surprised if you had a peripheral which did not have a 64bit driver for it.

you have now! :)

vista64 wasn't too bad, some software programs needed upgrading, that cost me, an MO drive didn't run except from a 32bit VM. drivers for 64 sound cards are a shocker, they work in the basic sense but are feature dumbed down for my hardware. (possibly more of a vista issue than a 64bit on though) Go here if you want to see other peoples pain http://www.vistax64.com/

XP64bit, now that was ugly! (and it's a "64bit OS") motherboard had no drivers (nvidia too) the disk controller worked funny and wiped a partition and required full restore from backup. several other things failed and I just gave up on it.

I'm back to XP32bit with 4gb of ram sitting idle in my machine (but runs faster anyway). if I go vista I will do 64 and not 32bit, otherwise there's no point but MS is promising Windows 7 as "vista without the pain" so I might just wait and skip vista
