USB sticks and disk formats for reliable use

Post by PB »

I have a SanDisk 4 GB USB stick and recently, at work, became unable to
write to it (except for folder creation: weird!). I thought perhaps the admins
had decided to disable writing to USB devices, but that's contrary to company
policy in which they always tell us to save e-mail attachments to external
disks to save server space. So I knew it couldn't be that. I even checked
the Registry setting that disables writing to USB devices but it wasn't set.

So, yeah, it was weird. One week I could write to it; the next, nothing.
If I right-clicked a folder in it and selected "New Text Document" I would
get a message saying writing is disabled (or something). Same for any
other file type. However, I could right-click and create new folders.

To cut a long story short, I found out later that the stick had no permissions
to write to it. That led me to surmise that because I recently reformatted it
as NTFS, that that format was the problem. So I got home and reformatted
it as FAT32 (because I couldn't even format it at work) and when I took it in
the next day, yep, you guessed it, I could write to it again! :)

The moral of the story: if you need your portable stick to work on ANY PC
with no issues, DON'T use NTFS! You'll never know when it'll fail on you due
to permissions. NTFS is just a little too powerful for its own good. Stick with
FAT32 for guaranteed compatibility (and it also means you can use it on a
Win 98/ME PC, if you ever encounter such a situation, such as when you
visit Granny to install the latest virus-checking app on her ancient PC).

Hi Edwin, how did it get damaged? Wikipedia mentions the "Gadget Show"
where they tested USB sticks and they determined they were the strongest
of all media storage. I quote from Wikipedia:
Channel Five's Gadget Show cooked a flash drive with propane, froze it with dry ice, submerged it in various acidic liquids, ran over it with a jeep and fired it against a wall with a mortar. A company specializing in recovering lost data from computer drives managed to recover all the data on the drive. [19] All the other removal storage devices, using optical or magnetic discs or semiconductor (Secure Digital) were completely destroyed.
You must have REALLY killed it. :)

My 8GB sandisk is formatted in NTFS, never had any problems with it moving between systems. However, I did read something a little while back about an issue with some sandisk's and NTFS where there were some faulty chips used that after a while for some reason lost a few bits here and there resulting in the problem you outlined.

I doubt my problem was anything due to a fault. When I viewed the Properties
for the disk, it was clearly marked as Read-Only. I'll have to see if I can replicate
the problem tomorrow.

When i plugged it in it briefly showed the blue light and turned off again.
(Each time)
At some point i managed to bend the casing and gave me brief access to the device but later on it was no longer possible.
That was also the attempt to move the files to HD but it was to late.
Could be a simple PCB break.
I bought a portable HD for only 50 EURO's (160GB) and i have much more fun with that.
Speed is very acceptable and better then that sandisk.
