Acronis True Image
Acronis True Image
Well, I finally gave up on Acronis True Image. Seemed like it was always a struggle to keep it working and this last update was really bad.
The install of build 8101 didn't go well apparently because when I tried to change TryAndDie service to disabled since I don't use it, I got error messages saying the data wasn't in the registry.
Then when I went to do a backup. In the past I could do a full system backup of both my drives in about 3 hours, but this time after 3 hours it wasn't even 10% through the first drive. And finally in the past, system load during the backup was so low that I couldn't tell it was running but this time my was very sluggish while the backup was running.
Seems like Acronis takes 1 or 2 steps forward but then takes 3 or 4 steps backwards with each update.
Time to move on I guess, so I removed all traces of True Image from my system.
I'm trying Genie Backup Manager 8 Home now and so far I like it.
Just wondering what everyone else here uses for backup software.

DriveImage XML 1.21, a freeware that got a positive article in the very good German computer-magazine c't 2 or 3 years ago.Tipperton wrote:Just wondering what everyone else here uses for backup software.
I'm very satiesfied with its features, speed and reliability since then.
Infos can be found at runtime.org.
Sorry 4 my poor English, it's the only one I learned 40 years ago...

Genie turned out to be slow and buggy. The bugs I saw were minor but so obvious that it made me wonder how well tested it was.ts-soft wrote:Acronis TrueImage 11 Home, without problems, very fast. I use it on WindowsXP SP3 and Vista Ultimate 64.
Re-installed True Image Home 11 build 8053 and it's working the way it should, so I think I'll skip the new 8101 build as bad news.
I have been using Image for Windows from http://www.terabyteunlimited.com for many years without any problems. It also has a decent partition manager and by using a free add on program called phylock will back up your drive while it is still in use.

My C drive is for Windows / Operating System.
My D drive is for installed applications and data.
For backing up my D drive, I currently just burn DVDs as required.
For keeping my C drive 100% clean, I use Sandboxie. What I do is thus:
After a clean install of Windows on C, I install www.sandboxie.com on the
D drive and then install and run all apps through it. This means each app
cannot affect any other part of the system, leaving both C and D clean.
Even if an app tries to delete all files on C, it won't be able to (I tried it!).
For trialling new apps it's great, because you know nothing is going to be
touching C or D or the Registry and you can discard any apps you don't
like while leaving C and D in the clean condition they were before trialling.
Also, it's totally free if you don't want to pay for any advanced functionality.

Security Zone! (Only tested).
I use three harddisk (one for xp, one for vista and ubuntu and one für data
and backup. True Image works fine on my PC (Backup and Restore), only
mounting a Image works sometimes not right on Vista.

Hmm... That must have been a beta release because their web site only shows 8053 and 8101 as available builds for v11 Home.ts-soft wrote:I use Version 11.0 (Build 8.064). I have never used Try&Decide and a Security Zone! (Only tested).
I too do not use the Security Zone, nor do I mount images, If I need something off an image, I simply explore it through True Image. Much simpler and more releable IMHO than mounting.
It's a german build!

Robocopy (M$) to external drive turn off except when I want to back up. An update of the robocopy mirror takes a couple of minutes on average on USB and it's a few hundred Gig now.
I like being able to pull bits out of and test files in backups without having to run any backup software or restore parts of some drives to virtual machines etc.
I have used Nero backitup to make images of my PC and they seem to work fine (restored into a virtal machine to test), no incermental features like the big drive imaging packages. It comes with Nero so I tried it.
When people ask me about drive image software for backups I usually point them to acronis true image based on the things I've heard about it over the years from people who use it.

Had Norton Ghost... it was O.K. but needed to revert to DOS to make a complete back-up.Tipperton wrote: Just wondering what everyone else here uses for backup software.
Had Acronis... didn't like it at all.
Now using XXClone. http://www.xxclone.com/
It can make various kinds of back-ups. I like a complete byte for byte back-up so that if C: drive crashes I simply boot up on D: drive and carry on.
I have an icon on my desktop and when I've finished for the day... I simply press the icon and walk away. It completes the backup and shuts itself down.

I backup using a program that I wrote in PureBasic.
It is designed to backup only to an external HDD as that is what I prefer to use. After the initial configuration and first backup, it is a doddle to use and very fast.

I have troubles finding a good backup app as well.
acronis failed several times on verification maybe because drive C: is in use??
Also for my XP it should be easy to use the native file:// stuff (nt)
and make it an iso.
An iso *may* be easy to make it a cdrom and somehow easier to restore?
Not sure how to make a good backup and restore with system files like a registered windows xp.
That xx thing only copies to a target but i did not like that.
I also doubt how to restore from a dos disk or sort of bootable device.
That's my main concern, restore without registration.
Since i expect billy to shutdown the xp reg process within a few years?

That's easy, just copy wpa.dbl and wpa.bak from the system32 directory to a safe place. Then as long as it's the same computer, if you have to reload Windows, boot into safe mode and copy those saved files back into the system32 directory, then boot normally. The wpa files contain your Windows XP activation data.Edwin Knoppert wrote:Not sure how to make a good backup and restore with system files like a registered windows xp.
They won't shut it down entirely, though you may have to go through a manual activation by calling Microsoft.Edwin Knoppert wrote:That's my main concern, restore without registration. Since i expect billy to shutdown the xp reg process within a few years?
Also it won't be Billy that shuts it down. He retired from Microsoft about a week ago.
