You should get yourself a phone that's 3G, the iPhone is more Ali G.techjunkie wrote:IMHO it is THE mobile - years ahead before competition... You can't really compare it to other mobile phones.
Have you seen their cars?techjunkie wrote:It has taken a large potion of the market in the states (I guess it wouldn't have if it was a crapy product)

Well, to convince all in this forum that iPhone is best - please tell me if any other mobile device is using this (in development environment),
* Objective-C, C++ or C (gcc)
* OpenGL
* OpenAL
* SQLite 3
One thing is for sure... Apple (or Steve Jobs) sure make use of open standards and open sources - and that would encourage most of the folks in this forum... or?!?

3G, 3G, 3G... It has GPRS/EDGE/BLUETOOTH/WIFI and that's really okay for me now... I'm sure there will be a 3G device in a near future. Maybe when firmware 2.0 (and new HW) arrives to the public in June... ?!?the.weavster wrote:You should get yourself a phone that's 3G, the iPhone is more Ali G.techjunkie wrote:IMHO it is THE mobile - years ahead before competition... Hmmm... I also has a Sony Ericsson K800 3G phone and I must say it's a pain in the famous a**... Incredible expensive and you can't compare to a real WiFi connection... it's like EDGE... :roll:
(Don't try to convince me - I'm a iPhone addict and going to make a bunch of $$$$ on sweet applications for the iPhone... 70% to me and 30% to Apple... Hehe... )

Some models of the iPhone have 3G - I think the spanish version has it.
But the hardware in the 3G version is different from the hardware in the non-3G version. If you don't have it now, then its very unlikely you will have it after a 2.0 update.
Mind you, some HTC mobiles have GPS chips in them that are disabled in software, you just need to get a patch file to enable the GPS functions!!!
The fact that most models don't have 3G and that the camera is just 2M pixels just makes it a bit overhyped imho.
My phone isn't perfect, but it does a lot more than the iphone and is free (on a £20pm contract
) - it has GPS, Wireless lan, 3G, Edge, Bluetooth, and Windows Mobile 6. I have a 8GB memory card in it. The camera lets it down being only 2MPix, a lot are 5MPix now.
Using Google or Microsoft maps with the 3G and GPS is great!

Of course I don't have it by a firmware update, you need a new iPhone (HW) for that...DoubleDutch wrote:But the hardware in the 3G version is different from the hardware in the non-3G version. If you don't have it now, then its very unlikely you will have it after a 2.0 update.
No, I admit the 2M pixel camera sucks - but the other features overcome this. I don't know how many mobile phone I have used - it's a lot... but this is more than a mobile phone.DoubleDutch wrote:The fact that most models don't have 3G and that the camera is just 2M pixels just makes it a bit overhyped imho.
You really don't know how to explain it before you actually have one in your hand... Isn't there any more iPhone users in this forum?
(One side effect is that they are really easy to sell. My friend is importing from the states and have sold about 600 iPhones in 8 month, earning about $200 / phone... Good money...

It was a big mistake for Apple to release it in the UK with only 2Mpix, the norm is becoming 3G and 5Mpix here, some even have optical as well as digital zoom.

I ordered aCECT888phone from China an hour ago. I found a lot of iPhone clones for
sale too, but..
I don't like the clones, and I dont like the original either, so they
can have their SDK for themselves as far as I'm concerned, no fun at all..

The closest you get with this SDK is the ipod touch, which is not a bad option. The iphone OS seems to be highly oriented towards the touch interface hence the availability for just iphone/ipod touch.Violet wrote:It would be more interesting to get an SDK for the other iPods like the nano...
As for the business model being genius - it strikes me the model is a direct copy of the Japanese i-mode model invented by docomo about 9 years ago - which really drove the mobile content market in Japan.
I'm curious about programming for this.. i don't know about objective c.. it seems like a complicated programming environment, ripe for someone to wrap the OS with a more approachable tool.
The Apple presentation was very slick especially with the $100 million venture fund trundled out right at the very end.. it was very smooth, yet the handling of developer registrations was a bit unsmooth with Apple putting all registrations on hold (but you can still d/l the SDK). There's an odd feeling of excitement & concern at the same time from developers. Ultimately people are deriving their excitement from Apple's dominance in the online music business, hoping it will flow onto mobile apps - at least in the US. It will be interesting to see how it actually pans out for the rest of the world, particularly in Asian countries, where mobile is already very established with other mature platforms in their respective countries.
