The education system does worry me somewhat as my 6 year old daughter is currently doing very well in school and yet looking at the teenagers living in this area you have to wonder what is going to happen to her in the next 7 years to turn her into a brain dead zombie who's best prospect of a job is going to be working in a fast food restaurant.

Not that working in a FFR is bad or below anyone, it's just not a career is it!!

I have the same issue with my 6 year old daughter. We're looking at private schools, now. Might see if we can get her into Red Maids. The way I see it, it's the only way to save her future, and our headaches. The issue is, though, that we shouldn't need to pay for our children to grow up correctly, it should be the strongest policy of the educational institution.

Recent research has shown English teenagers drink more alcohol, take more drugs, have more sex, get in more fights, spend less time with their family and more time with their mates than any of their European counterparts - if I was a teenager in any other part of Europe I would now be trying to persuade my parent(s) to relocate to England.

I also have a six year old daughter at state school and they seem much more intent on indoctrinating her than they do in educating her - it really makes me fume. England is a secular state so why are they filling our childrens' heads with this sh*t in state schools? Fortunately she's already asking the 'who created the creator' question which is the first step to enlightenment.

I would much prefer to see meditation and reflection in schools than hymns and prayers.

Totally agree with you there, nothing against religion if it works for you, but for me I prefer the scientific approach and if meditation helps to clear the mind and allow deeper concentration then that's good.

My Wife and I are Wiccan (but lazy at it). We have very scientific notions about life and death, which I won't go into in this forum. Needless to say, we've requested our daughter not take part in any Christian related activities at school. This isn't because we're anti-christian. Far from it. Many of our friends are Mormons (only because they're so damn nice, if mislead), but simply because children are so bombarded with christian notions in everyday life, that we prefer a balance. We're fine with her being bombarded with other cultural beliefs.

Anyway, we had a real tough time from the school headmaster about it, and still get issues. Also, my wife lost her eyesight this year, meaning Tabitha's home based education has slowed loads, and we've had no support whatsoever from the school. The school is allowed to receive all educational literature in audio form for free from Cambridge and Oxford publishers (where most of the educational stuff comes from), but the headmaster hasn't even looked into it in the past 10 months, even though we gave him all the literature, phone numbers, contacts and everything else to empower him to do so. If he even bothered to get audio form literature (like Tabitha's reading books), then my wife could learn her books before hand, and help Tabitha to read. The school could also help by putting the school bulletin in audio, but when we asked, they said "NO!". That's actually illegal, as my wife is entitled to be able to provide my daughter with the same advantages (and dissadvantages

) as every other child, but we just can't get the support. Put bluntly, state education can kiss my hairy derrier!

Yay!!! I used to make the sunday school teacher cry when I started asking all my questions... I was 5 and she was 40... it is sad when you have no idea how to answer a 5 year old that you reach to the "You must have faith...." answer. :roll:

Never trusted it (the "faith" thingee!)

I would not put a child in school today. I am quite well certified to teach him/her all they need to know.

Need someone to help with the math bits after 6th grade though... I was ruined by education and only pick up again in college with topics like Topology and Statistics... I can do geometry but I cannot do Algebra. Then again Algebra is essentially nonsense!

We home educated for a while (til Jay lost her eye sight). It's proven that children who are home educated get on far better, both academically and socially. When schools say home education is anti-social, they've not realised that most home educated children spend tons of time with other home educated kids, plus adults that treat them like equals. That's far better than being cattled in an institution with hundreds of kids their own age and a screwed up "respect your elders" system. Also, you don't have to be intelligent to home educate. Kids pick stuff up on their own. You just have to be able to teach them the fundamentals, like how to read or do simple math, then they pick the rest up on their own. Course, you have to make sure they do at least two hours of schooling per day, and supply the materials (books etc), but those two hours are more fruitful than a whole day at school for any other kid.

Now my wifes gaining confidence with her blindness, we're still considering home educating our youngest. It's too late for Tabitha, as she's so sociable, we can't get her out of school, but we're backing her education up with daily tutors for one hour each time.

Shame she has to go to school at all really. We'll only do that, though, if she asks.
