Believe me, a Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 is more than enough!
Its speed is just 1.86Ghz, but if you want, you can overclock it by 30% to make it 2.4Ghz (and that with a very little risk to fry your CPU!) from the BIOS if it supports ASUS AI (P5LD2 does, so I am quite certain that P5B does too..). Also, a GeForce 7600GT is very good and has the best performance and price ratio.

I have the above mentioned hardware and I can play World of Warcraft: Burning Crusade (through Cedega 6.0 in Linux) with 65fps and the CPU heat was only 45C and the GPU heat just 53C!! And when running WoW natively in Windows XP, I have 68fps (not a big difference at all!)

My advice is not to get a GeForce 8800 yet, because there are very few games now that actually make use of DirectX 10 and Shader Model 4; so I would wait for a year or two until good games arrive and when the prices drop down.
Cute?

Tipperton wrote:I have always prefered building a system instead of buying a pre-built one.

Main reasons are:
  • You can hand pick the exact configuration you want
  • No custom parts so replacement/upgrading if needed is easy
That's true and if you look at the prestanda / cost, it's actually cheaper to build the system yourself than buy a pre-built system with the same specifications.

Tranquil wrote:You should build your new PC but I would strongly advice you to wait at least one month.

Intel gives new prices to their CPU in April 2007. Decrease of 40% on their CPUs. Another thingie is, that ATI/ AMD announces their new GPU R600 on 23/24 April. The new price for the R600 should not more then 399$ and this card should be faster then the GeForce8800 by Nvidia.

I have also planed to build a new pc, but I will wait until March for sure.

Cheers
Mike
Thanks m8t! :) That's important information. March? :wink: You mean May?

If you have the time then build.

My old computer died and I had to replace it overnight so ended up getting a Packard Bell (pre-built) and the only good thing in it is the cpu!

Ironically, I was looking to update the old computer anyway but I wanted to just upgrade a few parts.

Thank you all, that suggested sites - but I just recalled that we had the best site in Sweden... *lol*

http://www.prisjakt.nu/produkt.php?p=102731&c=eur

It clearly shows that "Home of Hardware" is the cheapest in EU, then Mindfactory, Gamesprit.de and so on. Home of Hardare also get great points from Swedish byers. :D

You say? :wink: Well, I'll think I go for E6600 - the reviews are very, VERY good and the difference in price aren't so much. I talked with some friends that have E6600 2.4 GHz and they have overclocked to 3.5 GHz without any problems. I've also read some tests there they have clocked it to 4.0 GHz with special cooling. Seems as Intel Core 2 Duo series is the right way to go... :D
[EDIT]
Or maybe Quad? :lol: Have to call Ahead and see when Nero Vision is going to support quads...

And when winter comes to Sweden, you can take a dukt pipe, put it behind the air intake of your case fan and put the other end out your window. Than when it gets cold outside you get seriously good PC cooling ;)
I've thought about doing that myself for some time but haven't gotten that far yet.

Here's a small idea sketch I made.

You may take a look here: (site in german but scroll down to the table for new Intelprices)

http://www.computerbase.de/news/hardwar ... kte_intel/

The E6700 will then have the same price as the E6600 for now. So my eyes will fall on this processor. Quad-Cores are nice but even not supported yet and quiet expensive. The E6700 is fairly a good choice for that amount of money.

Hey AMD? Whats going on there? You are still alive? :P

:cry: :cry: Why did you post that link? I only look at the "3. Quartal 07" prices... *lol* Just joking, thanks - a very good list!

If you build your system you don't have to buy an proprietary OS.

this is no argument:
when I said "buy a complete one" I also meant an individual setup, not one from the row.

if I wanted a new PC right now, I would also tell my seller to put an XP on it, no Vista.
your Seller could also install a LINUX if you want that.

the point is, you shouldn't buy a MediaMarkt-PC from the row,
but buy at a small seller and tell him how you want it.
oh... and have a nice day.

Why? You have plenty off free Linux versions around! :wink: and if I want to use a Microsoft OS, there is no problems. We are Microsoft Certified / Gold Partners at work, so I have access to all Microsoft Products for free (used in work of course) and I work at home a lot, so... :D (Well, not all Microsoft Products maybe, but a lot of them... Internal Use Licenses)

Buy an OS is a waste of money for me (as long as I work for this company).

Does anyone in the forum use one of the following cases,

* Antec Nine Hundred
* Antec P180B
* Antec Sonata II

Antec P180B seems really good.
