a laser-pointer is a possibillity, but be careful with the laser, never hit their eyes directly,
and also never hit too shiny surfaces, a clear reflection is almost as dangerous.

a LED is less powerful and less dangerous. (because it's not really monochromatic)
they go mad because of the bright point and it's less exhausting for you than using the classic mouse-on-a-string.
I know it from the cats of my sister....
