The reason why I all of a sudden wanted to try Vista is because I got it for free (my school is part of this MSDN shit..) :P
Are you sure about that? I can think of one program in your list that I personally had running perfectly under Wine... MSDN shit? Is that a new name for the pirate bay or something?

No, MS is finally following the "truth in advertising" laws

I plugged my microphone into the one which is internally connected to the motherboard, and yes, my motherboard has in-box drivers for Vista.
OK, just a silly question. Are you sure the sound card will accept a mic input? I know it sounds stupid, but please humor me.

(is it ...'my motherboard has in-box drivers for Vista'...or...does Vista have in-box drivers for your device?)

Of the three jacks:
One connected internally to the motherboard,
One in the right speaker,
One in the front panel of the ATX case.

One in the Right speaker?

And...I assume that you tried plugging the mic into all the jacks to see if it would work?

From the pic you posted only one jack is detected - the front panel jack. Why are'nt the other two detected? Is there some sort of problem with the device? What do you see if you click on the 'Properties' button for the controller device? Is this device integrated on the motherboard or a seperate plug in card?

The soundcard does accept microphone input, or else the mic wouldn't work in WinXP. My motherboard came with drivers for Vista and I am sure they are all installed succesfully. Yup, I have Logitech S200 OEM speakers, and the right speaker has a jack for headphones and a jack for a microphone. Yup, I tried all 3, but with no results. I can't tell why Vista sees only one jack.. the soundcard is an onboard one (Realtek or something like that).

I would rather undergo a Colonoscopy with a garden hose than use Vista.

OK, I use Realtex on board sound, it detects my microphone just fine. Your pics say that its a Microsoft High Definition device. Did you by chance load the wrong drivers? Vista doesn't have in-box drivers for the RealTex AC-97 cards, but there was a driver posted on windows update to take care of that immediately before RTM and now the RealTek works fine.

Maybe Vista doesn't come with Realtek AC79 drivers, but the drivers came with my motherboard support CD and they certainly are Vista capable. Anyway, I'll look for other drivers just incase it is a driver issue..

I've yet have to find a software ( including games ) that i didnt get to run under wine. have you tried setting your stuff via winecfg ? Sometimes selecting different versions of your windows version helps. Anotehr hint is have the msvc*.dll's in your .wine/windows/system32 folder ( alot of stuff uses them and wont run without). About Cubase i know it runs udner wine - check the soudn config in winecfg - just one downside - the latency due some wrapped routines is pretty bad compared ( depending of what you use it for you migth not even notice tho ).

An alternative is a Virtual Machine:

Free, Superfast, Easy to install!

I get the FL Studio GUI to open up when executing through Wine, but as soon as I start to do something (for example, use the Piano-Roll), the GUI crashes with an unhandled exception. FL Studio just doesn't run under Wine.

I got Cubase somehow to run, but I needed to use a crack because Wine couldn't handle the USB dongle "Steinberg Key". However, not only is the latency very bad, the GUI crashes if I edit MIDI data.

I am not going to go as far as emulating Windows, because my machine just doesn't have enough RAM/Ghz to be able to emulate Windows at decent speed.

Oh, and these games definately don't run under Wine:
Chaos Legion
Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening Special Edition
MegaMan X7 Korean Version
MegaMan X8 English Version

I installed dx9wine too (Wine with DriectX patches), but even then the above mentioned games don't work (especially my favorite, Chaos Legion). A little weird thing is, that with CrossOver Office I can run Devil May Cry 3, but the graphics look bad and there are (many) missing polygons.

I also have bought Cedega and even with that I can't run the above mentioned games. And lastly, yesterday I tried Cedega CVS just incase those games would work, but no results.

WHY THE HELL IS THERE NO UNIVERSAL EXECUTABLE FORMAT WHICH WORKS ON WINDOWS, LINUX AND MAC?!!!

I am going to invent an universal executable format and sell its license for 1 zillion and get more rich than Bill Gay and then everyone can play games on all 3 platforms!
