Windows Vista doesn't recognize microphone...

Hi!

I have a problem, I plugged in my microphone to one of the mic jacks in my PC, booted up Vista and wanted to configure my microphone, but then it says there are no devices plugged in.. so I tried all mic jacks in my PC and rebooted on every change to make this f**king beast to understand something, but on each try it didn't work.. But when I try the same microphone in WinXP, it works flawlessly and plug'n'play.. so no need for reboots! But why doesn't this shit of Vista understand that there certainly IS a microphone plugged in??

A jack is not PNP like with drivers or anything. No need to find it or something like that, its pure analog!

I am not sure what you expect to use the mic with on Vista? Does Vista even "officially" fully support input MCI commands anymore? I know they left the emulation in for playback via MCI.

I know hardware accelerated DirectSound is gone. If nothing else, you could write your own drivers for your microphone or sound card.

However, I would look into getting a sound card that is fully Vista compatible and has functional Vista drivers.

If you are using a USB mic, make sure it is Vista compatible and you have proper drivers installed.

Trying to comfort me with it so in the next 5 years I won't have many problems with it..

Oh and with plug'n'play I mean that when I plug the microphone in a mic jack and then go to Control Panel (in WinXP) and configure Sound Devices, it recognizes the microphone without the need for reboots.

EDIT: Also, my PC should be "Vista compatible", atleast that is said on my motherboard and other devices, and Device Manager doesn't show any faulty devices.. And it's a classic microphone with this 3.5mm jack plug thing, so not an USB one.. I would get a new one, but this one costed around 50 EUR as it's a studio microphone.

I think since microphones are analog it won't matter what microphoen you have you could probabvly use a a headphone and shout out loud^^
It's probably the Soundcard that doesn't work correctly

Tried, but Device Manager says I have up-to-date drivers..

Plug the mic in, go to Start-Control Panel - Sound -----click 'Recording' tab - highlight the mic then click 'Properties button. Then click the 'Custom' tab and check the 'mic boost' check box, then click the 'Levels' tab and adjust the microphone level.

HaaaHa! You probably need drivers. Does your sound card have in-box drivers in Vista? And....is your jack actually connected internally to the motherboard?

There are 3 jacks:
One connected internally to the motherboard,
One in the right speaker,
One in the front panel of the ATX case.

I plugged my microphone into the one which is internally connected to the motherboard, and yes, my motherboard has in-box drivers for Vista.

If you are using Vista and have sound or video issues, you really need to learn to live with the issues. Seriously, it will probably be Fall of '07 before the more serious Vista compatibility issues & driver issues are fixed.

Thanks for pointing that out.. it might be that. I have always hated Microsoft and I prefer Linux, but most of the applications that I use don't run under Wine or CrossOver

(Cubase, FL Studio, etc..)

The reason why I all of a sudden wanted to try Vista is because I got it for free (my school is part of this MSDN shit..)
