No, but the service should still be available for all.ricardo wrote:25 users paying 0.38 cts per week, makes 500 USD per year.
With that amount Fred can get a VPS in spry.com only for the forums.
Is really a bad idea?

You budget is 2.40 euros per week?DarkDragon wrote: Uhm about 2,40EUR for 2 coca cola/sprite/fanta in school(I have to drink something within 10 hours).
Well, i guess many people here spend much more than the requiered 0.38 USD per week in anything without giving it any importance.
If we convince 25 people (including german forums) to pay that fee, we can get a VPS for the forums.
Read my suggestion again.DarkDragon wrote:No, but the service should still be available for all.ricardo wrote:25 users paying 0.38 cts per week, makes 500 USD per year.

The only difference will be that premium users (or "solidarity users") will shown the title on their profile.

I think a voluntary-pay system with the forums open to all would have no difficulty generating enough revenue to pay for some really top-notch hosting. I'm all for it IF it would prevent events like the past few days. But would it? What's the source of our problems? Before this happened we had many months of uninterrupted good service imho. Is it some kind of attack directed at us? If it is, how would switching to a more expensive host prevent future attacks from occurring?
If this is an attack directed at us, I have a message for the perpetrator:
You would have better luck attacking our main root server, which is at ip address = 127.0.0.1

Based on past experience, I wouldn't hope. There were times the forums were completely down for a week and once even for two weeks, before Fred got around to getting things squared away.I hoped that someone was actually doing something about the problem,
Whatever he did the last time, has had the forums running for quite a while without incident.
What is sad is there is not really any unofficial community sites for us to hang out at when things like this happen

Server load is the problem. This is the problem you get when you have to share a MySQL server with an UNKNOWN amount of users. intermittent loss of connection to the DB, because your own site or perhaps somebody else's is exceeding the set limit of the server. Yes, it could be down to a spider searching through forum posts or it could be some random act of cyber-terrorism... If it is bot traffic that is the problem, it is fixable., but looking at the forum stats, this site has had heavier traffic in the past and not fallen to it's knees...??? so, again it looks like the server is getting overloaded.
