Probably the biggest reasons most people don't abandon Windows are:
  1. Software avaiilability, go into any coputer or software store and you'll find a lot more software for Windows than any other OS, in fact in most stores the Windows software section is bigger than the software sections for all the other OSes (uncluding Macs) combined.
  2. By the time most people realize that there may be a better OS than Windows, they have a pretty significant investment in Windows based software that they'd have to abandon if they were to change OSes and most people won't do that.

OK, it is foreseeable that this will end in another flamewar. There are always reasons why a specific operating system sucks.

Probably the reason is people just don't realize that there is free and open source software:
  1. I fire up my package manager of choice and download the software I need from a repository. There is more software in there than in any software store. No need to pay something. No need to leave the desk. I just install the software when I need it.
  2. By the time most people should realize that they should stop spending money for proprietary software, that is restricting their possibilities. But they just don't. Call it whatever you want, I've a name for it.
Erm... OK, here is my video contribution to this thread...

Tipperton is absolutely right when it comes to me. I will never leave Windows
because all the software I've ever bought and written is for Windows. Bill's
got me. However, things like ReactOS are interesting projects, which I keep
an eye on, because if a non-Windows OS gets released that can run all my
Windows apps at 100% speed, then I would definitely leave Windows ASAP.
I compile using 5.31 (x86) on Win 7 Ultimate (64-bit).

@FloHimself: Is this the first-ever PureBasic video on YouTube?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5O-6q_p_p-I

The keywords and yellow editor give it away. :)

Hehe... That's strange! Don't you use your computer? *lol* I have had at least 5 - 6 blue screens with XP because of crapy device drivers and a rootkit one (and that ¤%&¤#& rootkit was really har to get rid off).

I use quality peripherals (Logitech, nVidia, etc) with excellent drivers. ;)

No malware enters my PC. :)

Haha like nvidia is quality. Serious people go ATI (unless you need some special stuff like pure opengl cards blablabla)

I can agree on logitech though. Their stuff simply works! And it works forever. I still use the optical trackball i bought loong time ago, and it works as new! Also my Wingman extreme joystick :)

My microsoft natural ergonomic 4000 keyboard works as a charm too. And all my creative products too. Basically, everything i have works except my brain (hey, its sunday)

har har har... what a discussion....

it's like: "democracy is the worst system, but there is no other"

if you like to stick to windows, do it, complain as much as you want, but be aware that you want to stick to it...

if you want to change, give MAC a try or just LINUX....

and besides.....

It was not my intent to start a flamewar, I was just pointing out why people stay with Windows, even if they think it "sucks".

Maybe it's you that wants to start a flamewar?

My solution to drivers is to stay a little behind in the current latest "stuff", I figure that older "stuff" will have more mature drivers with fewer problems. And whenever possible, I stick to WHQL certified drivers. I may not have the latest and greatest "stuff", but I also never have driver problems.

I have to agree with Kaeru.

I had an nVidia based card that never gave me any trouble.

I switched to an ATI based card because I wanted some of its features. BIG MISTAKE! The drivers were so unstable that it made my system unusable.

Went back to nVidia and my system was rock solid stable again.

Since that experience, I've never even considered anything but nVidia. My mother board is even nVidia based as it has their nForce 2 Ultra chip set on it. Rock solid! :D
